articles are by 'wabcoman' aka richard cambell ; new zealand. Is good articles in there on HD5 6 11 16. Even a bit in the HD11 article about a old fart i know quite well with a 11ep  ------------- tits tyres and tracks they all cost you money |

This popped up on another site. Definite AC, slightly modified. The story is clearing brush with the drum on a cable on severely steep hillsides. It did not end well.

Dunno what you read Dave but that machine was certainly going 2 years ago. Machine is a HD16DP, massivly modified by its owner; a real AC guru, certainly the nz HD11 guru. He had several 11EP and series B tractors, all bush rigged, over the years. He built this in the late 70s. He sold this and the 11ep about 2 years ago. Has 21000 engine. Power is there to drive the custom made winch drums which used the steering system from a valentine tank to clutch and brake the independent winchs ; which control the 11000 kg roller so you can steer it down gullys. to flatten scrub for forestry conversion. Absolutely unreal to watch in operation; have seen the roller actually climb ten feet up a pine tree before smashing in in half and continue rolling. Original owner and builder is still going, and has a mint Allis 'HD5.5' he calls it that because has GM 3-71 power, HD6E track frames, 4 spool hyds and tows a cat 40 scoop. cheers Merv  ------------- tits tyres and tracks they all cost you money |

Was a number of these machines built in NZ for gravity scrub rolling. At least 3 others were built on Terex 82-30 and 82-40 machines and another on a HD21A with the drums on a turntable running rearward. The terexs were the same design as this but built by other owners and people ------------- tits tyres and tracks they all cost you money |

Hi Dave; ropes breaking is something that happens; and can be quite calamatous when one gets away ! Alot of wasted time pushing roads into gullys to attach a rope or series of ropes to retreive roller. He used to run 5 ton rollers off the winch ropes on the HD11s for crushing smaller easier blocks of land. Alot of the land had be used for sheep farming Cal; but when prices dropped out of sheep in the 70s alot of land reverted to scrub quickly. At that time the govt was paying a subsidy to plant pine trees; pinus radiata, or monterey pine being the favored species. When Lex first built his roller he came down to my area to work for govt forest service to scrub roll some marginal land for 3 months. It worked so well, he was there for 4 years ! ------------- tits tyres and tracks they all cost you money |
