Looks like a 600 planter frame. The units should be 72 or 74 if I remember right. Both units are in the same book. Ebay is a good place to get a manual. I planted lots of corn with the 600's that both Dad and I had. Went to a Deere 7200 to get better seed placement and better closing in notill. Seed corn companies do not grade corn as good as they did years ago and the plate planter do not deal with the variation as good as the plateless planters do. They can still do a good job but the stands in high population corn will not be as good as the newer planters. Tom |

Are the seed drives run by the closing wheels? If so, how is population changed ? Perhaps I am not understanding the picture though

I have a manual that says 70 series units. the ones show plastic boxes, maybe the same just newer, you have to change the drive and driven sprockets for population change. ------------- 1945 C, 1949 WF and WD, 1981 185, 1982 8030, unknown D14(nonrunner) |

| 600 frame, older seed boxes. I still used my 600 planter, it put down a better population than the buffalo, jd, ih, and kinze planters I had. the best for population control now a days from seed companies is use the small or medium or large round kernals. with flats you'll get double drops sometimes. and other times get a kernel to stick in the plate because of bad grading on the seed company fault. I try for a 6 inch drop between kernals, works the best for my dry land farm. not the 3 inch drops the renters use. |

I have a 600 Operators manual here. For sale by the way. It shows the same seed boxes but it shows 3 fert boxes, and I don't see any thing in it regarding the rear boxes, insecticide I think? It's titled "Operator's Manual, 600 series planter, For 110" frame". I'm thinking it would cover about any size frame for the most part. It looks like a 600 - 4 row frame, should have no-till coulters on front bar, dry fertilizer boxes FYI 1 box covers 2 rows, and 70 series planter units. Back in the early 80's I brought a twin to it home and pretty much scandalized the neighborhood when after taking a cutting of alfalfa on Memorial Day weekend. The weekend sprayed alfalfa with 2-4-D waited 1 or 2 days and planted field to corn, used Ortho's unipel fertilizer applied with planter. Made as good yield as any other corn I raised that year. To answer your question; seed population is changed with combination of sprockets on packer wheel / unit input shaft and by number of cells on the planter plates. ------------- AC 200, CAH, AC185D bareback, AC 180D bareback, D17 III, WF.
