A friend of mine is working on an engine with an intake valve that is stuck open. What are some good things to try to get it unstuck without pulling the head?
Thanks!

Have you tried the rope trick?

Thanks! That's a good idea! I'd heard that before but forgot about it until now. I'll tell him!

Tap on it with a hammer. Sometimes the spring will lift it back to pre tap position. Continued tapping loosens them up eventually. Have done it twice over the years.

Kroil is the oil I have had the most success with, in these situations.  Spray it on. Go have lunch. Give it a gentle tap when you get back to work.

Oil and tap on it like others have said is what I've done a couple times.

It's a Deere engine in a 55 combine.

I'll tell the guy these tips and hopefully he'll get it unstuck! Combine only sat a year in a barn, so I'm kinda surprised it stuck after that short amount of time.

If something has not caused the valve stem to be bent I have had good luck placing a block as tall as the other valve stems beside the stuck down valve. Then use a screwdriver under the top of the spring and pry up as I tap on the top of the stem after removing the rocker arm first. With that short of time I might take a chance on light tapping on the rocker arm. If the stem goes down when tapping and there are no space in the spring and it stays down I would be a big fan in removing the head. If the engine was running rough when shut down the last time I would remove the head. On a 55 I would guess the engine has substantial wear in the guides unless recently overhauled. If it stuck from a burned valve and carbon has gone up a worn guide I would worry about the valve head striking the piston. The history of the engine would be helpful to the owner in making a decision on how to proceed if the valve does not free up easy.

I'd be concerned about the valve seat and head being rusty if the valve stem is rusted in the valve guide. Then tapping on the valve stem could move the valve guide out of place and the valve seat may not let the valve close. I think its time to pull the head and do a complete valve job grinding all the valves and making sure the valve guides, valve springs, and keepers are all in good shape.
