Well, my beloved 651 suddenly started using oil, and knocking. Idling and using hydraulics, was fine, but pushing with the bucket would knock. I let it cool, and it was fine for another hour, than started again. Now it knows at startup, so I'm working on getting the pan pulled, but the axle is in the way.

And the tractor is 45 minutes away at our new house site, with nothing but trees. So i'm having to ferry tools to work on it, and can't ever seem to get it all together. Sure do miss all those tools I lost in the fire!

Well Jim it could be a couple of things. Sometimes rods or mains can give this sound. Also a scored liner can cause it. Crankshaft end play can do it, as in too much. You can short out an injector by using a short pry bar to stop the injector from operating. It will change the sound. A mechanics scope will isolate the sound for you. Perhaps you've chipped a timing gear. I'm sure their are others things to cause the sound also. Hpoe it's not real serious.

Should have a 4 cyl engine in it. Same as the 175? To short a cylinder out will need to crack open the injector feed line to each cylinder one at a time and drop the fuel to let that cylinder coast or miss. Should be a Perkins.

I believe that engine is a D2200, 4 of 6 cylinders of the 301.
