I have a WD starter that came with a WD that I recently bought off of craigslist. The starter was not hooked into the tractor when I bought it but it did come with the tractor. I couldn't get it to work in the tractor so I took it off and just hooked up the battery with it on the bench. Nothing happened. I took a look at the lever driven connection on the side and it appeared to be making contact. I also took a look see at the brushes and they appeared to be making contact as well. If the starter didn't move one bit when I tried it what seems to be the issue?

I would make sure the contacts inside the starter switch and clean and flat. A small fairly smooth file works good, just keep the flat at the same angle as original so both contacts have a good surface area to mate.
 Next might be to check with a meter to see if windings aren't opened up.

Buckyman, take it to Autozone or one of the auto parts places.  They will check it out for free and let you know what's wrong.

if the bolt on the side. You connect the battery to has been turned the connection is broken inside.  or it could be open windings.  best thing to do is find a starter alternator shop.  I recently took my d14 starter in.  converted it to  12v  and a new solenoid.  I think it was 80$.  it's never worked better.

Are you sure when you bench tested the starter that it had a good ground?

I am not sure what I was doing wrong. Dad says the battery has charge but he questioned the cables that I used to connect the starter to the battery. They are normal battery cables that are slightly corroded. Could that be a factor in the situation?

Is this 6 volts or 12 volts? If it’s 6 volts those run of the mill auto store battery cables won’t br good enough.

Because there is little tolerance for stray voltage drop in a 6 volt system, battery posts and connectors need cleaning twice a year. 12 volt systems can run a couple years between post cleaning.

Battery cables from the wallyworld kiosk tend to be way too small a conductor for a 6 volt starter.

When removing battery cables its safest to remove the  ground first because if the wrench hits a ground it won't short the battery, then with the ground removed its safer to disconnet the hot connector because then if the wrench accidentally hits something grounded like the frame or battery box, it won't short the battery. A shorted battery can supply 1000 amps which is more than the wrench can handle without getting very hot.

I must not have previously stated that this is a 12 volt system not a 6 volt just to clarify.

Sounds like the starter has a dead spot on the armature. Yup, have it checked.
