My neighbor wants to trade his Massey Furgeson  35 for my WD-45. Apparently, his granddad had one like it.

The 35 has a loader with lift and tilt bucket. Two valve remote hydraulics.

My Wd-45  was recently converted to 12v. It also has the three-point conversion.  Rebuilt carb, new coil, battery etc. It is in perfect shape with wheel weights.

I am giving up a little hp, but get a loader and live hydraulics.

Would you trade?

wow,  no way would I trade on one of those turds.   with the loader it will steer like a lumber wagon and unless it has a front pump the hydraulics wont be too woopie.   I don't like how you sit down low straddling the tractor,  but im am partial to orange

My father-in-law had a MF 35.  Don't trade.  Don't even look at it.Wink

I wouldn't. If you want a loader, find one for the 45 and learn to use the hand clutch. The 35 is a handy little tractor, but not with a loader

The only place you will gain is with the three point hitch, Massey three point hitchs are among the best, way better than a conversion on an Allis, position and draft control are top notch, other than that, as mentioned above, a 35 isn't much of a loader tractor.

My grandpa bought a new MF 35 Deluxe Diesel in the early/mid sixties and he and my dad only have good things to say about that little tractor. Dad said for its size it would do a lot of work. They also had a WD 45 and only had good things to say about it also.

If you search it on the internet, Massey Ferguson is still building the 35 diesel tractor in some part of the world, and has been building it since its introduction.

I agree with Ken. 3pt hitch is of superior design/use. Position control and draft control are nice to have. (But you can get WD45 3pt kits that use the traction booster, right?)

Looked up what bharper said, and I was really surprised! If I was in the market for a "new old tractor" I might would buy one.

Seems I also heard a company is building knock-off versions of the John Deere letter series 2 cylinders for those 3rd world farmers, but I haven't found evidence to back it up.

And yes, a 35 is a good utility tractor, but is a dog with a loader. Even with live hydraulics and if it has power steering, lift very much and your back wheels will barely be making ground contact, unless it's really weighted down back there.

I'll bet he'd like to trade! If it was me the WD45 will stay at my place.
I think about you guys trying to hook-up to a three point hitch plow backing up and then pull forward time and again only to get mad just to get off and pull or push the plow around so the lift links will line up. As I back into a SC plow and not get off  one time to hook up. Well I forgot them little two bottom MF plows are not that heavy. LOL

If the 135 in question, don't have PS, no way.  If it does, check fer leaks, in the PS system!

I'm with Dave.  It would be a no go if no PS.

On the farm we had a Massey 235 and a 245 with loader. Both of them were excellent tractors. I'm not as familiar with the 35, but it would be a tough call.

If I wanted a utility tractor with a small loader, and maybe a bushhog to mow with, I'd pick the 35. The live hydraulic and 6 speed high low make it very nice to slowly mow around obstacles or slowly backup equipment into sheds and such. The granny forward and reverse is very nice.

If I wanted a "farm" tractor, I'd pick the WD45. I would not like a loader or to do a lot of forwards mowing with a 45.

I wonder if you could try out that 35 for a while first since it is your neighbor? Maybe swap tractors for the summer? Who knows, you both might want to keep what you already have.

You didn't say if thre MF 35 is a diesel or not. My self if I wanted and needed a front loader with hrydrlic dump bucket I would trade in a new york minute.

I guess Guys here have never heard of quick hitches makes hooking to 3 pt Equipment just as simple or maybe even simplier as you can see the quick hitch to line up with the lift pins and you can buy one for the little ferggy for as little as $100 to as high as $500 depending what you want to spend.
I have it on my Kubota and find it easier than the SC on my D17.

As for power steering the WD 45 didn't in most cases come with it either so installing a front loader and plumbing for a hrydrlic dump bucket can be Just as costly operation. You would still be with out power steering.

I would buy one of thre many power steering kits on the market for the MF 35 if I found I was a woossss and couldn't turn the tractor.

I would then spend the time searching if I really wanted a WD /  WD45.
Tractor house this morning has 26 listings for a WD 45.

The MF 35 listing is 22 but only a couple with front loader in the USA.

Take both to a sale and I'd bet the 35 will bring 2X as much as the WD45 so trade sell the 35 and buy another WD45 and then you'll have enough for a loader may PS for the new WD45.

Thanks for the comments. I have the 3pt conversion on the WD-45 already. So the hydraulics and loader is the only upside to the 35 on the trade. I'm only farming 7 acres.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  Sure the WD45 has a lot more power, but if you're just using it as a utility tractor then the MF35 would be handier.  Like you said those small MF and Ford 8n tractors always bring high prices at consignment auctions, you never know what that Allis will bring.  My neighbor growing up had a MF TO35, he used it a lot for mowing, raking, and pulling hay wagons.  My neighbor now had several MF's including a MF 50 utility that we put a Paulson loader on.  It was kind of clumsy because it didn't have PS, but it wasn't any worse than a WD or WD 45 w/loader.

Pete, the 35 and the WD45 have nearly the same HP. I always thought the 35 was overpowered for its weight. The 35 and the 50 use the same engine. I've never driven a 50, but it seems that tractor's weight is better matched for the HP.

Well...all factors considered, I think I'll change my initial opinion. If you only have 7 acres, farming with a 35 would be just fine. I could go into my long spill about the Ferguson system and its advantages, but I won't.
Considering both have 3pt, I'd definitely go with the 35, especially since it's just on 7 acres. I think that situation would call more for a utility tractor (35) than a row crop tractor (WD45). My great-grandpa farmed 300 with horses, moving to a Ford 9N, then in 1953 a Jubilee. The Jubilee was the last tractor he had, and he quit farming in 1983, so it can definitely be done.
I use my 8N on our 5 acres, and while I wouldn't want a loader on it, it does everything I throw at it and comes back for more.
I guess I just feel like a WD45 would be a bit overkill for your operation, BUT... it's always better to be overpowered than underpowered. However, if the 35 and WD45 are roughly the same HP, I think you'll be good either way.

Actually I like the WD45 more than the 35. It sits higher and the seat and hand clutch feel like home. I do feel like I am straddling the 35. I was raised on a wd. My dad still has his WD which I can borrow or his Kubota 7040. I should post pictures of both wd and the wd45.

I've plowed all day sitting on a WD as well as on a MF 35. The 35 is more comfortable, without a doubt. The 35 has a six-speed transmission, but it's kind of a pain going between 3rd and 4th and back. The 35 deluxe will have power steering.

I didnt think a 35 had (live) hydraulic. I was thinking a 35 had to have to pto running to have any hydraulic operating. That being said im not sure iv never used a 35.

I'm not real familiar with the MF line, but the 35 I used had a dual stage clutch.. partway down stopped the forward motion but left the hydraulics and PTO engaged. All the way down disconnected everything. No PTO was needed for hydraulics.

If you are going to use the tractor for your hobby farm and the 35 was in good condition, I would have done it yesterday.

I guess it depends on your condition/age also and if you are sentimentally attached to the Allis.

I don't do any tillage on my 5 acre ranch.  The 8N and D 15 II (both are restored) slumber under car covers in the barn.  I do my piddling with the JD 1026r

I have a mf65 diesel been a excellent little tractor, been to a few auctions trying to buy a mf35 for my old man and they brought way more than a wd45, but then again that's around here and not saying there a better tractor.

don't matter what colour the tractor is, if it ain't got PS, using a loader, even empty, is NOT fun ! Once I built a carryall for my D-14, the loader came off PDQ. Still sitting here on a trailer waiting for someone, anyone to take it away.
