You guys on this site always have the best info so here it goes. I have some older tractors in my fleet that have always used 30w oil for years but all my new tractors and skidsteers use 15w40, Dad always said never use multi grade in the old girls. Walmart 15-40 in all of them from Homesteader all the way up. They are 50 years or more old and the oil is certified by the same sanctioning body as the premium brands. I save 20 bucks or more on a 5 gallon pail. Tractors do fine and I don't go broke.

I run the new multi-weight in all my old tractors. Far superior to anything that was available at the time. |

| I agree with the "fillingstation" post. It's not the viscosity, it's the detergent. If the engine has been run on a nondetergent oil for years and has stored up a bunch of sludge, you are better off to leave that sludge in place by staying with a nondetergent oil if available. I advised someone to switch at one one time only to have a good running engine start burning oil. If you rebuild and start with a clean engine, that's different. |
