Bought a second 7040 Just ordered the 3 filters,. 2 back ones and one for the P.D. 
How many gallons of fluid does the whole tractor take? Rear end + Trans under seat? 

25 gallons should do it I figure

How hard is it to change the rear filter elements? and where are the drain plugs located?

The rear differential elements 70269921 70269922 'belly filters' - you will not loose over a quart of oil pulling them (unless someone has removed the inside trap doors :-( . Screw out the retaining bolts, clean out the nuts welded to the covers and screw the bolts in them and the retaining bolts will push the cover out. PULL THE PLUGS OUT OF THE END OF
THE OLD ELEMENTS AND REINSTALL THEM IN THE NEW ONES. Failure to do so will cause big problems.   There are drain plugs visible and yes 25 gallons should do it. The spin on is standard procedure.   There is a screen for the georter pump directly behind the pumps accessed by removing the nearly square plate holding it up. 70265382 is the plate # look it up in agcopartsbooks.com
You will not get all the oil out - too many cavities - but enough to do the job you are intending to do. If you are trying to flush out all possible- purge the remote lines and steering lines and cylinder - lower the lift arms as well.

I'm working on a 7060 right now. I had steering cyl off to rebuild, oil cooler off to test, replaced all cooler and steering lines, drained trans, differential and both final drives, changed all 3 filters. I put 20 galloin it and that wasn't enough. I had to get another 5 gallons.

Thanks tbran and Leon B Mo. Doesn't seem too bad then, Have 4 pails of oil so just over 20 gallons, will have to grab another.

Found a huge hole in the exhaust diffuser elbow. Agco wanted $280 so I ordered one of ebay, $120 Canadian with shipping. Hopefully it works ok.

One remote valve seems stuck, going to have to free it up. And the tach isn't working

Yeah Going to order one today or tomorrow. Have the big thick service/repair manual, just never bought the operators yet.

Ok, So operators manual ordered. 
One more question, Alternator isn't charging It's a Delco Remy, Agco parts book lists 2 numbers. 
1100583 And 1102920   What is the difference?

Year model - amp rating - you are going to have an issue with the third prong which is the off set prong - not the side by side - giving the tach the correct signal possibly as to correct rpm - you will have to select the correct size of pulley and belt groove size to make the tach read correctly. Most later 7040's had Neihoff alternators$$$$... On my 7040 I drilled and tapped for flywheel pickup and procured an 8000 pick up and tach... then went with a 100 amp one wire alternator... todays alternator technology is much better than in the early day whenthey switched from delco to Neihoff due to alternator failures from the delco's...

I always said a Delco alternator was very easy to work on. Good thing, because you got to work on them a lot !!
