I am not an expert nor mechanic....think it has to do with shims in there somewhere... someone will jump in and give you more details...hopefully before the sun sets.

I second the shims, based on what I've heard about these clutches. There's a good video on You Tube showing the adjusting process, but I can't remember if it's for a WD or D series.
Like Floyd said, someone who knows more will chime in.

Hi Jordan - fellow Ontarian - Welcome to the Forum.

It could be a 'shim' issue, OR it could be a very large snap ring in the clutch assembly has come off.

Here is a link to an 'on line' Service Manual for WD

Have a look at page 34.

Gary

PS you'll probably have to register to GrandpasTractors to view it

if the snap ring came off, dont tear the tractor apart, those rings get weak after 50 or so years.it can be progressively installed and tack welded in place.if you have to remove shims.there is a dimension called out in the manual, but cant recall it as of now.when you remove the shims,be SURE line the cavity with a large  bath towel to prevent loosing a shim pak or a bolt and washer, where it will go is only ia WAG.....I always adjust mine by feel, when you get a good positive snap after removing a spefic amount of shims, you are there.....

I have seen linkage pins come out and cause this problem too. If you are lucky taking a few shims out will solve your problem.

IBWD MIke View Drop Down could you elaborate more on the linkage issue the snap ring is definitely there everything seems to look and function right as i move the clutch with the cover off hoping removing shims will do the trick but if not is there some i can visibly see that would indicate the linkage issue you have mentioned

On my wide front WD45, when I converted it from propane to gas I found one of the 'link pins' missing. I believe the ears were broken too. Will try to get some pics on here later today. I had lots of pics on here about this but thanks to the photobucket debacle they went away.

It sounds like removing some shims will solve your problem. If you have or can get a service manual for WD&WD45 it explains this very nicely.

overcenter link pins.....usually when you loose a link it inverably gets into the pto intermediate gear and really makes a mess of things.i have replaced 3 pto intermediate gears and 1 case where the gear came through the side of ir all due to the overcenter link pin came out.these were all on other peoples tractors, and its no fun job.....

Picture attempt; You can see the broken 'ear' in this shot. I think this is the clutch that came out of my wide front 45. Not sure if the ear broke and the pin left or vice versa, but it needed replaced one way or the other.

Here is a shot of the whole clutch less the shims. Since it is a 3 disc unit it has the solid shim that a 2 disc doesn't have.

I couldn't find a video on the in-tractor adjustment but this video shows the process of rebuilding and  out of tractor adjustment of the clutch.
This will give you insight on how it works.

I'll second this note in a BIG WAY-  I had one make the trip out of the clutch pack and go all the way through, and it wrecked the intermediate gear.  Not impossible to correct in-situ, but you'd best have a 5-gallon bucket of profanity on-hand, and a second 5-gallon bucket and cuss-shovel scrape up all the profanity when you're done.Wink
