I have a Series III D17 and need to shop for an aftermarket three point hitch kit.  Normally I would just start an internet search on my own but I have found this forum to be really helpful. What comments can some of you have purchased these offer me?

Bought mine for my series iv from Tony’s tractors (has an ad on the bottom of the page) Tony is great to deal with. For the pre series iv’s you have a couple options

1. Mounts to the snap coupler drawbar and allows you to leave the drawbar on while the 3 Point is on. This is nice if you don’t use snap coupler implements but is extra pieces to take off if you do use snap coupler implements.

2. A snap coupler “Yoke” style mounted 3 point (looks like a “U” shape). Faster and easier to remove for snap coupler mounted implements but you don’t have a snap coupler mounted drawbar when the 3 Point is on because the 3 Point is snapped into the snap coupler.
It really depends on if you plan on using snap coupler mounted equipment or if your going to use mostly/all 3 point mounted equipment.

If it is a series IV, I would go to salvage yard and buy a factory from a D17IV- 170- 175-180-185.    MACK

I bought one from OK tractor years back for my Ser I D-17 . Very well built , heavy duty , have been happy with it. Mine is the style that goes in the snap coupler bell . I use both snap coupler and 3 pt equipment so that is the style I use . Like Travis said if 3pt is all you plan on using and want to use the draw bar with out switching stuff around a "Saginaw" style unit connects to drawbar mounts .Not as stout as a factory Ser IV 3 pt set up. Like Mack said that is the beefiest way to go as it is same 3 pt as larger tractors . Just have to have a Ser.IV to start with .

I put an aftermarket series 4 one on my series 2. Just needed the older style top link bracket. Myself only issue now is sway control.

Would seem that a Series IV aftermarket 3 point hitch kit could be mounted on a pre Series IV.  The kit weighs about 50lbs more and so it must be a lot sturdier.  Has anyone successfully done this.  I recognize the previous post where this was done but still needed sway control.

I got the Saginaw 3 point.  It fits D14, 15 & 17.  Not sure about the SIV.  It bolts up where the drawbar bail is bolted.  The best sway control you can get as far as I'm concerned.  They also have cat 1 and 2 balls in the lift arms.  You just spin them around to whichever you need.  Saginaw quit making them and I doubt they'll start up again.  last time I was there it seemed they were not doing much of anything.  They got a lot of parts in them barns tho!  I have seen them on here for sale, so if you're not in a hurry you might shop around.

I give a strong second on the Saginaw.  I have used one for years and I want to sell it, but the rest of the tractor will be attached.

As I stated, I have a series 4 hitch on my series 2.  One of the drawbar bolt holes doesn't quite line up and you obviously need the correct top link bracket.  My only issue at the moment is sway control.  I haven't figured out exactly how to avoid it.

I welded a tube stock on each side of the drawbar carrier for sway control, I took my 3 point off this winter for some re-work. I’ve added a couple of gussets to the cross piece frame that bolts to the drawbar because it was bending. I have an international 4 row cultivator that is pretty heavy so I think that is the culprit! And I had to reweld one of the pins back on because this fall when I was sub-soiling the weld holding it on broke.

Just out of curiousity... If the Saginaw hitch is superior and the cost was reasonable why aren't they making them anymore?

Agreed.  I'd doubt they are selling one a month.  I doubt it would be profitable for them to tool up for a run unless they planned on making and selling at least 50.

Demand for sure! Not many people out there looking to add a 3 point to 50+ year old tractors anymore!
