| Some people hang them on their walls. I can't really tell for sure, but it seems the seller thinks the bullet holes and spray paint makes it worth more. |

Possession of such is illegal in many states. Sales of that sign only encourage theft to the detriment of public safety. When I worked for the county we would throw the vandalized signs in the recycle bin. The aluminum is of value. |

Knew a neighbor who collected these signs along with cars and models. Had a great collection. He showed me a sign that he had restored. Said it was a big mistake to have it restored. It would have had more value in its "work clothes" with some vandalism. Never know what people value what. Good Luck! Bill Long |

| This was about 10 - 15 years ago, in Lincoln NE. Guy advertised is traffic/Street sign collection for sale in the paper. Cops raided his place, confiscated the collection, and gave him a ticket. When the guy went to court, he had every receipt from each purchase of a sign, turns out each one had been purchased legally. Cost the county a lot of money for that mistake. As far as the original question goes, what does it matter, if someone wants it, is willing to pay for it, more power to them. It's not for me to decide/question how someone should spend their money. |

When I was in high school, we would try to hit the road signs with a glass pop bottle (remember those) thrown out the passenger side car window. bottom line: Local tax payer pays for replacement of such items via their local real estate taxes. The local Township road commissioner will order & pay for new stop sign to be delivered to his building, then call local JULIE to mark under ground utilities in area where new sign will probably require a new post too, then pay an employee to dig a new post hole & install new post, and then mount new stop sign to that post. What do you think that will cost for just one stop sign? What could it potentially cost if there is an accident due to this missing stop sign - one life, two lives, three lives, how many families would suffer from those lost lives????? Not to mention any court costs for all of it. I was a kid once and made some stupid moves then too. My parents or someone from our community pointed out issues like this to me. Today things seems different though. Maybe local schools should require a local government course that helps point out things about such issues??

I think that if kids were required to participate in each step of the sign's manufacture, then sent out with locators to determine where utilities were located, then equipment to set the post, then install the sign, then attend to the scene when there was a grisly accident, transport vicitms to the hospital, and then inform the vicitims' loved ones of their loss, there would be much less vandalism of signs. What amazes me about people shooting at signs (and I'm an avid marksman...) that every one I see is located where it is blatantly unclear downrange for a miss or through-shot. The irresponsibility of shooting a 3/8" hole in a sign is one thing... but allowing a projectile to continue free flight downrange is entirely unacceptible, and warrants much higher disapproval. I am NOT surprised to see people legally 'owning' old signs- it's not unusual nowdays to see traffic agencies doing regular replacement, because new sign manufacturing techniques and materials allow the use of enhanced retroreflective materials... they shed dirt and dust, and shine brighter. It's less expensive from manufacturing perspective to replace the old sign panel, rather than try to remove, straighten, strip, and reapply the face. What SHOULD happen, however, is that removed signs should be marked with an impression stamp of ID, then offered for sale at say... twice the scrap value of the materials and time invested... along with a bill of sale AND a 501c donation receipt for the tax-deductable charitable donation to local infrastructure. ANY kind of signage, be it municipal, official, commercial, etc., is all 'historical' in nature, and for that which was intended for 'public' has already been paid for by public funds... it is therefore my opinion that if they're taken out of service and slated for disposal, that the general public should have first-right-of-refusal access to it for any purpose other than simple recycling. If people like to collect memorabilia, they should not be deprived of that which they already own. IMO, the same goes for old municipal equipment- if someone wishes to purchase an old road grader for scrap value because they wish to have it for their own personal collection, the governmental entity must allow it, rather than forcibly condemn the machine to destruction.  ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |

Timing had to be just right or you could end up with an unbroken bottle bouncing back on your windshield or broken glass coming in the passenger window. Hence, the pony Miller sold in the 8-pack became the weapon of choice. I think that's how the older boys told the story back at the pool hall. Baby Herald, (you can imagine how big he was), was the champ, at 65mph, while driving, he had a wicked left hook that would cross the roof of car and never miss. ------------- Maximum use of available resources! |

| Looks to me that the sign needed to replaced. Vandalized and shot up like that. So the Township or whoever took it in for scrap or sold it at a surplus auction. Then a guy that works at the scrap yard took it home. Not all old signs are hot. |

Well, we've all heard the old saying = one mans trash, is another mans treasure. I had one that my brother in law bought many years ago from the county before scrapping, gave it to me when he was tired of it, and I gave it to my son in law to put up near the end of their very long driveway before our oldest granddaughter started riding her bicycle. Dad took her down the driveway and explained very seriously to her what that sign meant to her when she started riding. I think it worked.

not hard to add do-it-yourself "vandalism" to real or fake signs to make them "more interesting". also - four barely driving age rowdies (including me) found large letters from an old Shell gas station in a roadside pile of trash. we left the S and hung the rest on a clothesline in our campsite... till the ranger made us take it down. seems like "stupid teen stuff" is pretty universal. ------------- 3 Ford 8N's I loan to neighbors, but the '52CA, '41B and little B1 I do not. |
