I bought a 175 that was advertised as having had first and second gear replaced because of slipping out of those gears. I didn't test it but should have! Yes it comes out of second. Is there anyway of shaping up those rounded off cogs, like with with a carbide dremel to square off the cogs??? Any thoughts? I really don't want to gut the rear end pull everything out. Come on guys throw me a bone here or a miracle cure.

Sorry, there is none. The cogs are WORN, there is nothing to square off.
I would call the guy who sold you that tractor and ask for reparations.

Thanks, I figured that but I did read a post where someone tried that or something like that and it helped. Sounds like a winter project of which I already have to many.

You can only see 50% of the damage !! The coupling that slides over the dog teeth is chewed up too !!!!

Got it, I guess I hadn't really thought about that! Thanks. I bought it for my son-in-law to use for making hay should still be ok for that if I don't get around to fixing it this winter.

It would still be worth investigating whether or not it shifts into full engagement at the fork. See if you can shove it deeper in gear from the detent. If so, I'd be moving the detent slot(grind/weld). May not work but it could.

What Steve said may work for a while. As a rule of thumb I figure $1000 per gear that they jump out of to fix right.

Good luck finding second gear on the top shaft . I don't know if AGCO has any and they are a different gear ratio than a D1-7 or One-Seventy.

A&I products has 2nd mainshaft gear for 175

That's great if they do, but it better not be listed as the same part for a D-17. Oftentimes after-market parts are listed incorrectly as to what they fit.

Well, what do you know !! A & I Products really does have a second gear for the top shaft p/n 70255333 and the shift coupling 70232532. Now, if they just had the 70247726 gear to match the bottom shaft, you could have a 10% faster second gear in a D-17 or 170.

Yep, I have been keeping my eyes out for a good used countershaft gear from a 175 so I can put a the faster 2nd gear in a D17. Its beyond me why it took AC about 13 years of building D17s and 170s to figure out there is 2 wasted speeds, 1st high is the same as 2nd low and 2nd high is the same as 3rd low!!!

I concur with that. The 175 transmission gear speed spacing was really great other than with the slower ratio final drives, it made a gasser pretty slow unless you wound the engine up to 2200 RPM or more.

I've just now e-mailed A & I to see if they can't be convinced to start producing the 70247726 countershaft gear. Fingers are crossed.

Ok guys just so I get this right I need part no. 7025533 for my second gear and 70247726 for the coupling to fix my 175 from kicking out of gear while going down hill. Our AGCO dealer head mechanic did suggest that if I had extra travel in the second gear shift past the present detent that moving the detent might help. Do you guys have contact info for A@I. thanks again for the help. and Merry Christmas

You'll need one of 70255333 (2nd gear top) and 70232532 (sliding coupler/rev gear top) to repair jump out problem. 70247726 is the lower gear which you shouldn't need and they do not have anyway.

Id be cautious using A&I gears on an active tractor. They are not as hard as oem gears and wear faster. Their endplates for the power directors are crap. Would it be possible to get them hardened elsewhere? I have heard of people having luck on getting gears rewelded but have never had it done myself. Whats your opinion on rewelding gears Dr?

Maybe on a CA/D14-15 but when you get into a 180 or bigger, I think those gears are very HARD and don't know how anyone could weld the shift dogs back up to spec and have the material be the same quality afterwards. I doubt any 175's work hard enough pulling a plow or a disc to ever wear out A & I gears and remember the tractor already has "X" amount of hrs on it already.

I guess I was worried about the shift dogs not holding up on the A&I gears more than anything. Like I said the A&I PD endplates are so soft that the area where the rollers run wear out very fast. Funny thing is I called A&I and asked if the plates were heat treated. They guaranteed to me that they were harder than the AGCO ones. Worst thing is I believed them........

Second gear is also wider than D-17 and 170s second gear. Stronger too !

Before I did all this gear replacing I would modify the detent shaft and let it gear in deeper. Someone on another site said that Agco has the replacement shaft now to make it go in deeper like AC used to offer. Even if I did replace those gears I would modify the shaft anyway like AC should have when they built them. I have fixed several this way.JP

The shift "rail" from AGCO shifts 4th gear in deeper on models 180-185-190-200. There is no such part available for a 170-175 transmission.

Dr. Allis, what is the part number for the AGCO shift rail for the 180?

70261443 for the deep shift rail and 70261385 for a new fork if needed.

Thanks DrAllis. Is there a different deep shift rail & new fork AGCO number for a 190xt? I'll be reworking a series II's Trans in near future.

My D17 III jumps out of 2nd gear. If 1st high is same as 2nd low and 3rd low is same as 2nd high, and since this is my retirement putt-around tractor I think I'll leave it alone.

Can the rail and fork be replaced from the top without removing the transmission. Common sense tells me yes, but sometime that gets me in trouble. My 190 jumps out of 4th and 6th and this would be an easy fix if I can pull off the top cover and do it.

All shifting parts are done by cover removal. Now, when I say 4th gear, I mean 7th and 8th speeds....4th gear in the transmission. When you say 6th, you are talking 3rd gear in the trans. This different deep shift rail will NOT help a 3rd gear jump out problem. It can possibly be helped by relocating 3rd gears detent a little deeper, grinding a second detent for the neutral spring and doubling up both springs with a small diameter spring inside the existing one. I've done dozens of these as a fix short of transmission teardown.

Not to hijack post. I have a low hour 175 that jumps 4th gear. It acts like it don't set in detent at all. Tractor is showing right at 500 hours. Original tires front and back. It is easy to hold but when you let go it will fall out in no time at all. What would cause this?

Either the detent isn't working correctly or someone has the coupling and dog teeth all ground off in 500 hrs. Shift cover removal is the only way to know. It wouldn't take much to tell if the detent wasn't really working.....it would feel terribly soft.

Tracy, I fixed one a few years ago that had been doing that since it was almost new. You can fix yourself probably or bring it up here and I will do it for you. Did you get the hay baler fixed? Call me and I will explain how to fix your tranny. Thanks

Jack, I did fix the baler. When it warms up I am going to check the detent. I have always thought you could barely tell it had a detent at all. Thanks Tracy

I talked with our local AGCO mechanic he said if I have extra travel after the detent stop I can buy some time by moving the detent. I am talking 3rd 4th gear which some refer as 2nd. My question is how far back do I move the detent I am guessing 1/16 or maybe an 1/8 where do I start? thanks, you guys are great!!
