Talked with an old friend today , Billy Cruse in Miss who is a retired AC service rep who still is in the industrial engine repair business. I was asking him about the feeding issues mentioned here and the speeding up of the fan to help move the cotton up and in the throat to the grate. He mentioned the super stripper that was never put into production after one prototype was built, with the full size continental gin in it instead of the 1/2 size used in the 880 and the shame AC didn't have the dealer numbers in cotton country to support the sales. Even the last field campaign to replace the angel bars in the grate to round pipe to really clean up the sample was not fully implemented. The other issue I forgot about was about the last cotton PICKERS, Deere actually bought the patent rights on the new dofferless (no doffers) cotton picker row unit. The gears inside the spindle housing twisted the spindles that were on a drum like a Gleaner feeder beater and the spindles retracted back in the drum to release the cotton instead of having the doffers twist it off. The doffer system results in more broken fibers and were/are a high maintenance item . The spring loaded spindle drums worked so well at a high speed with less maintenance that the customer running the test unit out of West Memphis Arkansas really didn't want to give the unit up. Deere evidently never did anything with this technology. However some of the guys here who are more familiar with the pickers might have more insight as I have not kept up with picker technology. ------------- When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money.. |

So tbran, you are saying Allis invented the dofferless spindle setup and had a prototype, and then when Allis went down in the 80s they sold the rights to the design to John Deere and they shelved it, never to be used again? If so, interesting history! What was the capacity of the Allis Strippers? We have a buddy with a 7455 JD stripper and it is turning into quite the money pit, we teased him he needs an old Allis around. :) ------------- Gleaner: the properly engineered and built combine.
