I am new to the forum and I just bought a HD4 with hopes of bringing it back life. The dozer is in decent
Shape but, the engine is rusted and full of water. It also has a place on the block that has weld/brazing and some
Epoxy that was leaking. So I am not sure if it is even rebuildable. What are
Re powering options if any? Could a
2-71 Detroit be made to work in a HD 4 ?
Thanks Jim

Jim,
Welcome and good luck with the repairs.
Some pictures will help folks to understand and magnitude of your project.
I cant help you on the repower options but folks like ACmel should be able to.
 Regards,
 Chris

Might possibly have a good running used engine for your hd4, Rick

Hello Jim. Welcome to the forum. I have a h4 crawler with a gas motor. MY thoughts are what else is wrong with your machine. I would imagine you might be able to find a motor. Gas would be cheaper. Mine has plenty of power in 1st gear. Machines that are in decent shape that works fine don't really bring a lot of money. Parts can be very expensive as a lot of them were scrapped out when junkyard metal got so hi and the ones in the salvage yards they are very proud of. I don't know if there the same but when I go to the local dealer for parts for my motor he looks it up and it apparently has the same things I needed but were cross reference to a allis 190. Don't know if it will inter change or not. Maybe some others can tell you. What ever you do I wish you good luck and you will find there are a couple fellows on here that are very knowledgable on the h4

I don't have any experience with an H4 but im pretty sure it shares parts with  a D15  not a 190.

after rereading the original post stating HD4, I see what you meant.  yes motor parts, basically 2 cylinders knocked off a 301 for the HD4 4 cylinder motor.Big smile

AC 2200 engine - basic block and such are gas or diesel - then equipped to be powered by whichever fuel - engine was also used in cotton pickers and some other applications .
One thing if undercarriage or tracks are bad - you have unobtanium parts or lot of hope and pray you can find  what you need .
Check for slop in rear axle shaft as side bearings in case is another weak spot .
