I was tinkering around the other day on YouTube and noticed this video about a 185:

Does the injector pump really have that much control over the sound of the tractor? Here is (I believe) the same tractor before the rebuild:

I have had three 185s and none of them sounded like the one in the first video.  It is obviously running very well, but I am curious.  I always thought the Cummins sound was due to the overall design of the engine.

I know that the main thing is to get'em running and keep'em running. Sometimes, I just want to know why things work the way they do.  I am probably not alone in that on this board.  Any knowledge you care to pass along on this issue is appreciated.

You can wash the dirt off the body but you can’t wash the farmer out of the heart and soul

Like Bradley said. no muffler. Also increase engine speed and fuel will change the frequency.
Any 6 cylinder under like conditions will sound the same.

Perhaps Cummins should patent the sound of their engines. Harley Davidson tried to with theirs. :)

Straight pipe versus muffler, is one thing, and the rebuilt pump was probably modified some for pulling. That can change the sound of them.
