I have a 170 gas and looking at a 175 diesel coming up for auction. The years of production overlapped by several years so what are the differences? Any problems with the diesel? ------------- rieg |

| There were two different versions of the 170-175 as far as I'm concerned. The older models had the hydraulic pump mounted where the belt pulley goes, like a D-17 S4. The newer models had the front axle redesigned and the hydraulic pump was underneath the radiator, shaft driven by the crankshaft. All 175's had the heavier (and a little slower) final drives from a 180-185. All 175's had a 10% faster second (3rd & 5th) gear in the transmission. Early 175 diesels were the Perkins 236 cubes and later were 248 cubes. All 175's were 60 HP or a little more versus 54 HP on any 170. The One-Seventy came out in July of 1967 and the first 175 was in 1971 ?? Different decals and paint schemes over the years. |

And in the gas versions, both had the 226 engine rated at 1800 RPM. The 170 came with 8.0:1 compression ratio pistons (Z suffix in engine serial number) while the 175 was 8.2:1 (V suffix in engine serial number). The camshaft was different in the 175 gas tractor while the 170 used the same one as the D17. Someone else will have to explain what the camshaft differences actually are. I know there is a different profile on the lobes. Also, the 170 has a 1 1/8" diameter carburetor while the 175 is 1 1/4". |

| 175-180-185 final drives had wider bull and bull pinion gears and about 10% slower ratio. This allowed for the engine to run faster and keep actual ground speeds about the same. |

So, which of the "17" series of tractors was the best...In any event if the 175 goes reasonable, buy it. Never heard of any issues with either size Perkins. My Dad never had a 170 up tractor, I always thought they were one of Allis' most attractive looking tractors. That glossy photo on the cover of one of their pamphlets (I think it had a canopy on it and a guy standing in an Allis coat and hat beside)was unbelieveable. Ran a d17 diesel and a 185, both were great tractors. Trev.
