I have a K2 gleaner with the 433t engine. It been a great little machine but
there has always an issue with the starter not engaging the ring gear.
Sometimes it will engage on the first try, but more often clash and grind.
Over the years the original delco starter has had the nose cone bushing changed.
The ring gear has been deburred and rotated. Finally a news starter has been installed.
Nothing has corrected the clash and grind problem. Any advise to finally fix this
problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would look at the less likely things at this point since you have already tried the likely ones.  Get the battery load tested.  Check and clean the battery cables and where they attach to the engine/frame and starter solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter to make sure you have full power to that starter.  That's all I can think of.

I don't think the clash is battery related. It happened on the dealer lot back in 1999
when I bought it and it happened yesterday when I started it up to thresh soybeans.
I've always wondered if the engine adapter plate was machined correctly.
Who knows. Its a stumper.

Happens on my GM250 K2's gas engine too. About every 2-3 years, I'll have starter's nose bushing replaced. I've tried different starter, same results.

I wonder if a denso gear reduction starter will engage..

Back from the dead...
I finally got to the bottom
of my starter problem. The ring gear didn't have the lead edge machined. I changed the ring gear and no more clash. Only took twenty years. Wonder if it was under warranty...

Wow. If you have seen it all that's a new one!

Never seen one that didn't have the edges cut. Guess there's plenty I've not seen!
You could spend and hour with a grinding wheel and "fix" the old one.

The new ring gear was $80 from the Agco dealer. Cheap fix as far as I'm concerned. Wish I would have changed it the last time I had it off twenty years ago.
