When somebody says to, "Flash your battery". What does that mean and when and how do you do it?

The closest thing I can think of is "equalize your battery." Some chargers will do this. Usually this is done when you have a bank of batteries. I've never seen it done on a single battery.

Flashing a generator is usually done at the voltage regulator. Its important to do that if the tractor has set several months or the generator has been to a service shop or is new to the tractor. Flashing establishes a residual magnetic field in the field poles so the generator builds the polarity to match the battery. Sometimes without flashing the generator won't build at all. When tested at the generator shop they may have tested it with the opposite polarity of your tractor battery and left the wrong polarity residual field so it builds wrong and can kill the regulator cutout section when it tries to charge with the wrong polarity.
Generally flashing is done by temporarily connecting the B and A terminals on the regulator or cutout with a wire for a couple seconds. There often is a spark when the connection is broken so the technique is called flashing. Flashing should always be done before starting the tractor whether with a tested, rebuilt, long stored, or new generator.
Flashing doesn't affect the regulator, just the generator. Its not effective with an alternator and not needed.
