I've read several discussions here about PTOs that won't stay engaged and possible problems with the linkage and/or the PTO shaft.  The PTO on my 1968 180 will disengage under a heavy load. The linkage is fine.  I'm changing the hydraulic and transmission fluid and thought I would take the opportunity to pull the PTO shaft.  I've removed the plate and would appreciate some guidance on pulling the shaft.  Looks like there is a bearing that will come out with it and a gasket that needs to be removed. How do I get on it with a puller?  Any advice appreciated.  If, I hope, lots of you are at the "Gathering of the Orange" in Ottawa, Kansas this weekend (which is about 15 miles from my place)  I will understand the delayed response. With the three bolts out, it should slide out. When one is stuck, I have a PTO yoke with a nut welded in it for my slide hammer.
When you engage your lever, can you feel the détente? If not, better take a good look for sloppy linkage. If lever hits dash, you have sloppy linkage.   MACK

Thanks Mack.  I'll see what I can rig up to work as a slide hammer.  The lever doesn't hit the dash but I'm not sure I consistently feel a detente.  I'll look it over again.   Bill

Mack, does it matter if the PTO is engaged or not?  Mine is now disengaged.  Bill

A sqirt or two of PB Blaster and a couple of hard yanks and the shaft came out.  Sure enough, the shaft has some burring, fortunately not much.  The linkage IS also a problem.  It's been repaired and reinforced at the pivot shaft, but the piece that was added is rubbing against the end of the spring holding the clutch pedal.  Going to try and reverse the spring and see if that helps.  If not, I may grind the top of the linkage arm that's binding.  The bearing is shot and I'll be replacing that, too.  Will follow up if I have anything else to add.  Bill
