Anyone have insight to this....jumps out of 3rd....looks like a rebuild could be a tough job....read where detents could be problem....could use some help with this...hand clutch is still strong...new engine clutch and assc parts...is the his a hard fix for an experienced mech ?

The CA tranny is pretty simple. Don't worry about the detents. The jumping out of gear is do to "grinding the gears " . You will need to replace or rebuild the gear and the coupler.
The tranny is a Constant mash transmission . This means that all forward gears are turning all the time. To engage a gear the coupler is slid over an array of lugs that are near the ID of the gear. The lugs is where the issue is at. They get ground down and push the coupler back away from the gear.

Seabee, If you get into it remember to count the teeth on the gears as you remove them and be certain to be well aware of the position of the gears. There are two gears that are just a few cogs different. If you misplace them on the shaft you will have trouble getting it to fit. Also, a good parts manual will be a great help

Remember, if I can do it - and I did - I am certain you can do it.

You may as well face it if you want to stop the jumping out of gear. We used to do it with replacing the snap ring with a larger snap ring to take out the end play in the shaft. It worked some time but if you are really jumping out of gear the replacement indicated by Dennis is the only true fix.
