I cleaned up the 6080 and got a few problems fixed. When I started it up the tach would only read a constant 900 rpm. Pulled the plug on the alternator (I assume that is what feeds it), cleaned it up and I could get it to go to 0 or 900. I was messing with the fan switch and noticed it jumped up to the correct rpm. Turned blower back on and tach worked as it should. Any ideas what was going on?

Both belts are pretty tight....funny watching the AC belt when I play with the fan switch, the higher I turn it up the more it bounces! I guess running the AC does take some power.

Those belts have to be really tight. If I remember right one belt off the crank runs everything.

Mine has two belts. I tightened the alternator belt some more, and it appears to be working ok now. It read low for a few minutes for some reason, then caught up. Maybe getting a little slip yet when under heavy electrical load...had to crank quite awhile to get it to fire this morning. It doesn't like cold starts under 80 degrees LOL!

Could one of the pulleys be worn to where the belt is bottomed out?

Measure the charging voltage out of the alternator.  If the alternator isn't putting out 14-ish volts, the problem is alternator related.  The alternator needs to be charging before you'll get a tach output. Also check and ensure that the ground wire is secure from the tach.
