Subject: D17 diesel motor stuck help??

Got a d17 and the motor is stuck.. it's a diesels motor.. looks like the tractor has been stored inside for Many years. My ? Is do I try pulling in gear and brake it loose? Pull the head off and look? Or take the injectors out and soke? Thanks for the help

Forcing over by pulling it in gear can bend a connecting rod on the stuck cylinder when pushing up and that bent rod can make the piston drag more, the rod bearing drag more and the rod can break when it runs because of the crack at the bend.
Its much better to pull the head and the oil pan and work on one cylinder at a time from the top after unhooking the rod from the crankshaft. Likely you will lift piston and sleeve together and replace several because of rusting from moisture getting in a cylinder or two with the open exhaust valves.

I'd pull the head and look at the top of block for cracks first before putting a lot of work in it.

Guess I would just pull the injectors and squirt diesel/tranny fluid mix in and then rock the tractor back and forth in high gear and see if it would come loose... before putting the injectors in. Gasolene motors stick faster than diesels do, or that has been my experiance. To "rock" them, have done it several ways. putting the tractor into high gear and jacking one rear wheel off the ground and chained a 10-12 foot pipe to the wheel, or bolted a spare bar between drawbars of another tractor or bobcat to push and pull. DON'T, DO NOT ram it hard, or you could have breakage... and another is put a coupler on PTO shaft and a long bar and try turning the pto backwards and forwards.... and another way is taking the starter off and work through the hole prying on ring gear teeth with a bar that fits good in the tooth. but be careful not to damage the teeth.

My first thought is to take the starter out, to see if that is why its stuck.

quick, pop the starter off ! My 1st D-14 had a mouse CONDO inthe bell housing AND the starter! HAd to split the tractor and it took me 2 full hours to remove non-Allis 'stuff'. The starter would NOT spin there was so much 'stuff' in it( well the bendix area). It's also a good idea to bench test the starter, clean brushes, battery feed, etc. I prefer the 'turn PTO to turn engine' method. It's solid, safe and you have a 'feel' for what's gong on. When you do get the engine to just turn a tad, turn other way a wee bit.PATIENCE, gotta have patience. Slowly increse the turning range, take your time. Big problem, I just though of.... is with a diesel you got a LOT of compression and um, how do you keep it from 'self-starting' ? My D-14 is gas , so plugs were out.... hmmm. OK guys, educate me now I'm curious !

The pump could be stuck from sitting. best to take its drive gear out before getting too violent with the rest of the engine. Breakage in the pump and shaft can get really expensive, really fast!

My brother purchased a 190xt stuck. We pulled the head, blown head gasket in 3/4. Soaked all cylinders/pistons with Kroil over night. Pulled the starter and used a small pry bar and barely bumped the ring gear and she came free. Rotated and cleaned up all cylinders. New head gasket, pump rebuild to be on the safe side and she runs great.

Some people have been known to tie a real long 4X4 to the power take off or to the front pulley cross ways and hang a concrete block on the end. Spray the inside with your favorite panther pee and check the next morning. If the block is on the ground it's loose. If not on the ground try it the other direction. Of course tractor has to be in gear and one wheel off the ground.
