I have acquired a lot of old A.C. parts from a collector. I am looking for a high rpm (D17) governor spring for a current build(WD). Is there a way to tell one from another, all of mine seem to look the same.

Should have a paint stripe on the side, blue stripe is a D17/175 spring, white stripe is WC/WD spring, red stripe I believe is WD45, Gleaner E spring has no paint and the metal slug in the middle. There are yellow and green stripe springs also but I don't recall their application.

Our old WD had a slug in the spring.

Thanks Bill, I was able to find red paint on one the rest are either un-marked or worn off.

When I was a young whippersnapper I use to put the 100 AC Combine springs in WD’s. I think it increased the RPM 100 or 150. Some power unit springs will make the motor run real fast. You would have to look in parts book to get RPM

D-17 spring and 170/175 spring are NOT the same. D-17 spring is the strongest that I know of. A D-17 spring yields 2,000 RPM or a little more and a 170/175 spring yields 1800 RPM when using WC-WD-WD45-D-17 governor weights. 170/175 governors use DIFFERENT (lighter) gov weights and therefore use a different (lighter) spring. If you get new parts from AGCO be aware that none of them may be correct. Three years ago I got new 170/175 weights and they were not built correctly. I also got a 170/175 spring and it too was incorrect (too stiff). This info is correct and should be logged somewhere because there are people who think they know, but really don't know, and then when AGCO doesn't have correctly built new repair parts............

Part numbers for original governor springs---70229519 is for D-17 engines.....70226785 is for 170/175 tractors.......70220702 is for WD/WD45 tractors. There is a 70223498 power unit spring that would be between a 70220702 and a 70226785 for pull strength.

Is there any information regarding #'s of pull by x length one could use to verify springs or is putting it in the tractor the only way to really know?

Not to hijack this post, but will going to a D17 Governor spring on the WD45 increase the high idle? My recent acquisition does not seem to rev too high at full throttle. Is there any thing else I can do to increase it?

DR, I recently acquired a Z code Gleaner engine. I just bolted it in the frame tonight. I heard that the combine governor was much more responsive so I am utilizing the weights and ramp. Do you think a D17 spring would be too much? I am hoping to get around the 2000 rpm. It is a D17 engine, but I don't know if the combine and tractor would have used the same spring.

The tractor and combine governor's are different. The tractor governor is designed to drop maybe 400 RPM before the governor kicks in. The combine governor will drop about 200 RPM before the governor kicks in. I don't remember the actual RPM drops for sure, but that's the idea.

A WD45 governor spring will only yield 1700 RPM. A D-17 governor spring will get you 2,000 RPM or a little more. Using a D-17 governor spring with the combine weights is just fine. Tractor governor weights have a 300 RPM droop before they reach fully open. The combine weights are 150 RPM droop. These numbers are for properly adjusted governor linkage and a well tuned engine.
