Just picked up my first A/C tractor, its a 1940 Model B. When in 1st gear the tractor groans from what sounds like the transmission. Do I need to add some oil/fluid somewhere? Any idea what could be causing this noise?

Ain't been around a B but you ought to hear first gear in my WD which dad bought new.Yes it has grease.Straight cut gears are know to be noisy. You may not have a problem.

Mine does the same thing. Going to check the final drive lubricant after I pull off the mower

Mine does it in all gears. Sometimes it's a groan, but usually it's a whine Wink

There is a big square plug by your left heel when you sit on the tractor, it should be full of universal transmission fluid if you have a hydraulic pump on the tractor, otherwise 80-90 gear lube . The final drives (bull gear) gets 80-90 wt gear lube , add thru small pipe plug on side of bull gear cover, until full to level of plug.

Thanks a bunch for all of the reply's. With the advice posted above, I'll check the fluids and top them off as needed. If the noise remains I'll consider it normal...until there's a catastrophic failure of some sort LOL

Considering the fact that you're 1940 B is SEVENTY SEVEN YEARS OLD. That Ain't Bad if that is all there is.

As said above if you have a hydraulic be certain to add hyd tran fluid if the oil is low. And thinking again it could be wise to drain and refill. Can't Hurt. Remember, if you have a PTO Hydraulic there is a drain plug in the bottom of the PTO. Don't forget to drain that too. If you do not have a hydraulic you could add the heavier oil as said above. When my father first sold them they came through with 140 in the rear. It was the dickens to get out when hydraulics were added. We used kerosene to clean out the transmission.

In any event you have one of the most dependable tractors Allis Chalmers made. As you can see with normal maintenance it will give you a lifetime plus of work.
