Tractor is running great but the gauge is acting up. It will bounce about 700 rpm. If I have the gauge bouncing from 500 rpm up to 1200, it sounds like it is at 1200, not in between. It's bouncing pretty hard, 4-5 times per second. Is this a an rpm gear or cable slipping?
We rescued the tractor from a retired farm where the owner passed away, and haying this week is probably the first time the tractor had a good load on in 10 years.
Thanks for the help and happy 4th of July, all.

RPM gauge is electronic you probably have a loose wire on the alternator . ground is also possible alternator to be going out but lots of times it's just the wire going into the alternator into the side there's three of them together
------------- If you want a man to be a successful farmer, give him a Allis Chalmers tractor. If you want him to be a successful mechanic, give him a John Deere

Loose belt will make the tack jump
------------- You can wash the dirt off the body but you can’t wash the farmer out of the heart and soul

Please tell us what you find....... my 6060 does the same thing. Bounces, sometime goes to zero and than will operate properly. Mine acts like a loose wire. Afraid to tear into the insterment panel........ and the Service Manual doesn't have much information. Mine has room for 2 fan belts but only has one, it seems to be tight. I'll check the alternator wires.

The 3 prong hookup on the Alt. is usually the place for a bad connection, take the side panel off on the right side up by the dash, that will get you access to the tach, ive worked on a few of these , sometimes you get lucky with a wire ,loose belt, but they are 30+ years old and anything electrical exposed to outside conditions do give out

Whoops, better late than never. The alternator ended up smoking out on me so I replaced it and it also solved the bouncing tach issue.

Dads 6060 would not go above 1,000 rpm this week. Checked the connector, cleaned, and then realized the alternator belt was so loose! Tightened it up and it resolved the issue. We had replaced both clutches and forgot to tighten the alternator back up. What a relief.
