I bought a 175 diesel 5 or 6 years ago that had a new Perkins 4.248 engine in it. I always thought this engine took 8 quarts of oil, but it read high on the dipstick. Last year I started only putting 7 quarts in which read "full". I noticed the fuel economy went up, so I am thinking it may have been too full and maybe the crank was churning the oil? Does this sound possible? Also, the oil gage someone added shows 80 psi oil pressure at operating temp, which seems high. Anyway, I can't believe what this tractor does on fuel. Today I worked it pretty hard with the 8' Bush Hog in alfalfa on one job and steep hills on another and used less than 5 gallons of diesel in over 6 hours. Last week in lighter conditions I used 20 gallons in 24 hours of work. Thoughts?

Howdy Eldon,
This comes into play where I been putting in the amount of oil called for according to the book. Or do you put in the amount of oil which the stick reads? Both are different levels! I been watching this on cars, trucks, tractors and more. What the book says is always more oil then the stick says.

As far as the fuel use in general. Perkins engines were de-rated when used in the AC. Any other application in the machine world, the Perkins is a 75hp at 2500 rpm. So running it at 75% load should yield some excellent fuel economy on any diesel engine.

Eldon, My old 170d does great on fuel too. When mowing with a 15' batwing I only go thru 7 gallons or so in 7-8 hours of pasture mowing. Even my 180d does slightly more on fuel consumption maybe 10 gallons in 7-8 hours.
