Alright Shameless and Les, this one's for you! As you'll see, I'm using a mighty fine tractor to power a mighty fine combine! He inherited the tractor from his grandpa, and I inherited the combine from my great-grandpa who bought it new in 1950. He used it annually until 1983, when it was parked in a fencerow until spring 2015. I did a little work on it, and have used it for 3 harvests, and have yet to have a real breakdown. Have had a couple nuisances like throwing a chain once, but that's about it. I was impressed with that A, as I'd never ran a 2 cylinder for very long before. It did a good job and had plenty of power and low end torque, although most of the time it walked along as though the combine wasn't there. We cut in 3rd gear, which is almost 5 mph, and it wasn't throwing any grain out the side, except maybe a few small shriveled kernels here and there. All in all a great day! (Maybe the reason I liked the A was because I'm just used to small tractors like the B and 8N! Lol! It's nice having some real power!) I'd like to get a JD G one day (But probably won't; they all cost a fortune), as Dad grew up on one. Plus I like the bark of the 2 cylinder. I'll try to get more pics/videos uploaded for y'all later.

Nah, I'll always be an Allis tractor guy for real work, but for small little jobs I like Fords. The Deere is just kinda neat because it's different. Pop pop pop pop... Nevertheless, it was a fun day. We cut about 5 acres, but we didn't get started until about 2:00 pm, and we quit at about 7:30 pm. The elevator told us we had 100 bushels on the truck, so the wheat wasn't very good this year. At first I thought we must be losing a lot of grain, but when my buddy was cutting I would jog alongside and catch the material coming off the shoe with a scoop shovel, and the first time I checked there was no grain in the shovel, just chaff. I tried again 3 more times with the same results, even catching the straw off the rack. But....there was a ton of green rye in the field with rain coming, so we cut anyway. I kept trying to set it so I would still save grain, but lose all the rye in the bin. I tried everything, but nothing worked. Sure, I could get a clean bin sample, but then I was losing a ton of grain out the side. Only way I could not lose any grain was to have the dirty sample. I bet I adjusted the shoe, fan, etc, 12 times that day. Lol Guess I need a Scour-Kleen. That should help some.

A friend of mine had a 830D years ago, and he said it would pull as many bottoms as his 4010, and do more work in a day. He claimed it was easier on fuel and had more torque as well. |

Yes an 830 will out pull a 4010 and use less fuel but at a slower speed. But put both on a pto load like a forage harvester and the 4010 wins every time. Dad had a 720 on a two row forage harvester and in big corn the rpm's would drop and the corn would not make it to the wagon,but he still had power. If you have to spend 10 and 12 hour days on both you will take the 4010. Tom |
