Getting to my last nerve trying to cut a little hay with a sickle mower.  Has anyone had any luck running a smaller disk mower or a New Idea 7' Cut/Ditioner on a D17?  I have a front pump so hyd wouldn't be an issue.  I know not having the independent PTO would not be fun, but neither is what I am doing now.  When it works, it is a thing of beauty.  When it doesn't it could make the Pope cuss.

Look around for a drum mower, I pull a ccm 165 (5.5') with my D-12.  They are  heavy buggers, so don't go too much wider, or you'll need weights up front...

New Idea cut-ditioner will be good behind the D17. I pull a 9' one behind mine. I have been mowing hay with a D 17 since 1961, pulling a mounted, 3 point, or pull type sickle mower. I have not had a lot of trouble, gotta keep the sickle sharp and guards in good shape, need a grass board on the outer end of the bar and the grass rod on the inner shoe to keep things form plugging. Good luck with your mowing.

Dad's D-15 pulls his 9' AC haybine just fine, but we use the 6060 ever since he bought it in 1981. D-17 shouldn't have any problem.

I have a New Idea 6' cutditioner in heavy hay it will make a D19 talk. Does a great job but does take some power.

I run a 9 foot CutDitioner with a 190XT S3 and find in heavy clover it takes all the power the old Gal can make. I doubt a 17 would run a 7 foot in heavy hay.

I had a 9ft New Idea 299 Mowditioner and used my D17 but the 175 handled it way better. Really liked it but couldn't keep a gearbox in it.  Do not know if the cutditioner takes more power...Harvey

A 7' or 9' diskbine will make you wonder why you didn't get one sooner.

I agree 100%!

When I bought my discbine, our plans were to mow with both the discbine and our Hesston Hydra-Swing. After we bought the discbine, we rarely used the Hydra-Swing.

The discbine does take some power. I would think a D-17 would be a little small for a discbine.

I used to run a half wore out dull bladed cutditioner with the 170 when I worked for a guy that did custom baling. Only ting I ever ran it in was cornstalks. we windrowed with it for the baler.
I'm sure that 9 footer would pull harder in standing hay.

Your 17 will pull any 7 ft mower conditioner with crimper rolls. I had a cutdishner and you will use more fuel and time than you get from the hay your cutting. If it were me it would be a 7 ft disc mower that you have a dealer near. A mower conditioner will be slower. I'm using a 1320 hesston discbine behind a 6060 and in most hay it's ok. In rye or heavy hay I use a bigger tractor. Just my opinion and good luck, Scott

I have a NI Cutditioner and in regular hay it'll make the D19 work, that said its about my last choice of something to cut hay with. The only thing I ever found it to be really good for
was to scatter windrows that had been rained on.
