The nut is off (easy), but the pulley won't budge off the shaft. Tried the "smack it with a hammer strategy" to no avail. Do I need a puller?

Smack harder. I gave mine a slow turn and smacked around the edge. It is just a tapered shaft, but mine had paint between the pulley and shaft. It was more glued than stuck.

It's a tapered shaft. I hit mine real hard to get it off. Just turned it around and kept hitting it till it popped free. I'm real suprised I didn't wreck it getting it off. The one on my CA popped off with one hit on the shaft and a pry bar between it and the housing. If you've got a puller that'll pylon the center of the hub I'd try that and a couple whacks on the end of the puller. I didn't have a puller that worked.

If you have one of the aluminum pulleys it won't take much abuse to totally destroy it. The steel one are fairly tough.

small little 2lbs sledge hammer, and tap the out side, spin some tap, spin some tap, and just keep spinning and tapping, is what has worked for me.

granted i used PB blaster and sprayed it for 2 to 4 times over course of 2 days to help free things up some.

the spinning and tapping works the pulley lodging it back and forth, by spinning it and tapping it you work it around so hopefully it breaks free.

Put a blunt end on an air chisel and hit it a few times will jar most things loose.

Being I rebuild Generators and Alternators for a living, depending on the type of pulley that's on the unit GREATLY depends on how much force you want to use on it to remove the pulley. The thin steel type pulleys bend very easily, so if you get rough with it you're going to bend the pulley! It may not look bent, till you reinstall it and as the engine is running watch the pulley wobble. Now, the thicker steel pulleys can take the rap of a hammer a little better, but if you have a pulley thats rusted on, (or pressed on pretty tightly) a puller is the way to remove it without damaging it. Take it from someone who does this particular removal just about everyday. You can also stand the unit on end or in a vise and spray some penatrating oil on the shaft and let it sit overnight. The oil may creep down the shaft through the keyway (if equipped) and help release the pulley to remove it easier. HTH

Thanks to all. A piece of 2x4 to disburse the blow of a 3lb sledge made quick work out of it after having sprayed it with PB Blaster the night before. I now have it mowing well using the Woods deck and brackets that I got from Gary (thanks, as always, to Gary)!
