Our local rebuilder says " there is reason the brits drink warm beer ---Lucas refrigerators"
His opinion of them is pretty low but they are old Delco Remy folks.
They sold me a Denso gear reduction starter for my 190XTD and it is real improvement over the Delco.
I'm sure the Lucas started the tractor OK when it was all new (engine batteries starter) but reaching that all new status is unlikely today.
For the Starter to work at its peak the rotating parts have to be centered in the magnetic fields and the conductors all must be insulated to make the very best magnetic fields possible. Direct drive starters end up loosing some of this as they wear. The drive gear meshes into the ring gear is putting forces on the armature
that push it away from the center.
Gear reduction starters get their advantage by lessening these forces.

I know a lot of guys don't like the Lucas starter but the one on my 200 has been great. Been rebuilt once in 43 years. It works much better than the Delco that was on the 185 I bought new in 1972. But the 185 was a hard starter from day one and my 200 is the best starting tractor I've ever been around.

There was Lucas starters on 185 & 200 that was junk when new. A good one was good and a bad one was junk. I would not spend 10 cents on one. Just go buy a Denso gear reduction starter.    MACK
