Hi, I am looking at buying a 8010 2 WD with 5 speed High/low range. I had a drive of it today & it didn't want to go into gear when stationary. it was hard to push the shifter & gears ground some as well. it did shift most times OK when moving. the clutch seemed hard & close to fully extended so I don't know if its a clutch, linkage or gearbox issue. has anyone had this experience or know what could be wrong? I really like the tractor but I'm not prepared to spend big dollars on it to get it operational. thanks in anticipation!

| If you are not familiar with the 20-speed Power Director transmission, that could be the problem. The clutch pedal has to be CLEAR DOWN AS FAR AS IT WILL GO for the transmission brake to stop the gears from rotating. The leg effort is somewhat high compared to a power shift transmission. There is a cable from the clutch pedal down to the clutch valve (behind the batteries)that probably needs to be replaced to reduce this leg effort. |

| ...and,they never behave well at cold first start up.Drive it around for ten minutes and it works better.Also,you can't shift the 5-speed while moving and not clash teeth. |

thanks for that advice too. do you have to power off & clutch to shift the lever on the steering column from high to low? I really would be great-full for a start off to running explanation on this transmission. |

| Lever/switch on the steering wheel is ON-THE-GO like a T.A. on a Farmall. It always returns to LOW whenever the clutch is depressed. |

Thanks again, I want to buy this tractor for hay baling with a round baler ( not yet purchased) & loading bales on trucks with the F.E.L. Will this transmission be suitable for the back & forth loader work?

Back and forth loader work....Unless it is smoother operating than the version of this transmission I have in my 7045, I would not like it for loader work. Granted, mine is old, likely not in pristine condition, maybe slightly different feel in an older series tractor, I don't know as I've never driven an 8000 series. But I wouldn't like my 7045 on a loader. |

They are ok for a loader but not easy to reverse like newer tractors with reversers on them. It should do fine with a bit of practice. I doubt if you would want to load bales all day, every day, would get old real quick!
