Have a 330 tool bar pull type with 74 units....I thought I had everything figured out but it won't cover the seed..penetration leaves something to be desired....the ground is still slightly damp , but needed to get started with trouble shooting...These are new narrow fluted coulters...Do I set the units deeper or add more weight?? Been using just a little seed in the boxes to troubleshoot...any help appreciated...Mark

Do have spring down pressure on each unit? You need them to keep units in the ground. It takes 2 springs per unit.

330 frame was known as a full till, while the 333 was a no till frame.

damp soil is a big nono unit will place seed slightly less than notill coulter depth never run over 3.5 mph chevron press wheels will probably cover best although soil texture does affect this down pressure springs are good but not an absolute

are you experiencing soil blow out due to soil sticking to openers and being pulled out of the trench and leaving nothing to cover the seed ? Soil is peeled off by the scrapers and throw out past the press wheel. Probably so... We use a system like Sunflower drills - a metal strip welded to the front opener protector running beside each opener... works wonders in seed coverage.

stay outta that wet dirt....and do you have the adjustable hitch on the tongue? that will help a little, but you'll need them springs too!

Thanks for advice..you are right , it is a 333....hitch is adjusted level front to back...and I have all the springs....any other thoughts to get the whole rig running deeper appreciated. Mark

In our area originally many of these planters had two inch wide 8 wave coulters. I think in our soils these coulters run pretty shallow and slow in dry soil may have been a pretty good option to help on blowout. Really popular in the early days of wheat soybean double crop.
Worn opener disks can create depth and opener penetration issues and like others say soil blow out and too much speed or soil moisture lowers the performance of these planters.
To their credit they were designed in the 1960's and beat the pants off anything setting seed into no till at the time. They can still be made to work pretty well but in 50 years there have been some things developed and some expectations have been elevated. Mostly the adjustments to newer planters have been made easier.
Narrower coulters run a little deeper work in sod and also roots of the sod help with the blowout.
All these adjustments take some tools, time and trial and error and learning. It kind of seems tillage adapts the soil conditions to the planter. If you reduce tillage or no till you have to adapt the planter's operation to the soil.

My experience with no till is to take any coulters off and plant with the double disk openers only. If you have the proper down pressure springs and have the machine level there should not be any type of conditions you can't operate in from tilled soil to undisturbed sod.
