I had to place shim between the pedestal casting and gear that is attached to the horizontal shift . The gear had worn the casting which allowed the gears to separate.

Thanks & God Bless

My Dad bought a 1955 made CA in April 1956 and we still use it and the steering seems tight. It will go down the road full throttle and track fairly straight and it has a lot of hours on it and have never had the steering box touched.

Did you check the wheel bearings first? To tighten the pedestal you need to first check gear engagement. The side gear the one on the horazintal shaft is adjusted by adding or removing shims between the gear and casting. The lower gear I the pedestal is adjusted up by first removing shims between the pedestal and the casting and when you run out of shims there , you probably already are. You disassemble the pedestal send add shims under the gear. After you pull the lower gear that's almost always bad out and replace it.
