After a few phone conversations and much consideration, I decided it was worth a 3.5 hr. trip, one way, to look at this old '45 diesel......

It was a lovely ride.....but went home empty handed.

I wasn't too deterred by the one rotten power adjust rim, or the missing brake springs and sticky pedals, or the injection pump only opening up to about 3/4 throttle when the lever was at full.....

But when I pulled the radiator cap, my hopes sank; black oily drops floating in the antifreeze with a subtle steady amount of bubbles in the top tank.....

Shame. Had a lot of good going for it: Only had two owners. No cracks or welds on the block or head; Correct rear end with serial # ending in D; Started instantly without any aid, despite sitting for 6 months; (reputedly) and astonishingly, no discernible amount of blow-by

But with 6k price tag and the aforementioned issues, I knew I had to walk away.

Enjoy the pics:

He was asking $6,000, with the loader, a snap-coupler back blade, and the bush hog you see behind it , included.

He didn't seem too shocked or bothered about the oil and bubbles in the radiator and what that usually insinuates. Kept saying...."But it always starts right up, has all kinds of power and does everything I ask of it!" He claimed a friend offered him $4500. But I'm going to presume the friend was unaware of the extent of the tractors troubles.

By the time I left, he pretty much talked himself into keeping it and taking it with him when he moved; realizing it was worth far more to him than anyone else.

Good grief, why can't I find a deal like that!
