Just picked up a 1949 model D road grader and want to change the fluids. My question is I can find the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission and the fill level plug on the rear axle but the only fill plugs I can find are on the top of each of the tandem cases. Is there a transmission fill plug that i am missing or does the tandem cases, axle and transmission all share the same gear oil. Really appreciate all the help i can get. I don't want to drain anything without knowing how and how much to replace.

I don't have my grader any more or the service manuals but I seem to remember there was a plug on the side of the chain boxes that indicated the full level. You can get reproduction manuals from suppliers on this site.

Tumbling, Welcome to the forum!  You might get more info if you go to the Construction Equipment link.

I have a D super and although I haven't changed the oil yet. I suspect the drain plug should be pretty obvious,  the fill/check plug should be on the side of the trans.

I finally found the little buggers all covered up in old dried oil. Glad I did, a bit of water came out in both cases. I think the chains now are happy campers.
Thanks for your response.

The D grader we had would run bout 25 mph. But it would scare ya to run that fast. Lol.

Yeah, in my opinion they were geared too fast. I think that is why they came out with the auxiliary step down transmission later on. The transaxle was made by Clark and may have been used for another purpose and adapted for the D graders and the Galion  503 grader.
