| I think I need a lot if help. I just got my first tractor which is a 1968 I-400 with traction booster. It all worked well until I moved the traction booster levels and now the 3 point will slowly fall over time with the engine off and go to full up when I start the engine. I read the manual and it looks like both levers (booster control and position control) should be in the full forward position. This would be set at no traction booster and the position of the rear blade in the full down position. I would like to make sure this is correct before I start looking for other issues. I also have 3 levers facing forward towards my seat. I think this unit had a backhoe at one time. One lever should work the 3 point up and down. Not sure what the other two do. I can send pictures of my set up if that will help. I am thinking I have a stuck valve now that I moved a few levers but need to start with the basics and make sure I have levers in the correct place. Any help for guy that has no idea what he is doing would be great. |

Whatcha got is a mistake, in movin those 2 upper levers, in the first place. I did that a coupla times, the linkage freezes up, and you have to get underneath, and spray some penetrating oil, on them, and get them back in the original position. The 3 forward facing levers are lift/lower levers. closest one to your knee is 3 point, other 2 are for remote cyls...

Just joined the forum. I have a D17 Series IV with traction boast. 3 point does the exact same thing. Though none of us have touched the other levers in 40 years. A guy in St.Louis area that rebuilt one, told me freeing the linkage is a temporary fix. That it would keep doing it until the control head was rebuilt. ------------- AllisChalmers D17 Series IV. | If the only problem is that the 3-point settles over night, then I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of tractors have that much leak in the valves and for the work and time to fix, it's probably not worth it. |

| Yes it will settle overnight but as soon as I start the engine it lifts all the way up. Tried all of the levers in various combination. Nothing forces it down. It all worked well until I screwed with the traction boost. I can hear the pump and pump pressure being created when I move levers but the 3 point just stays all the way up. I tried some penetrating oil on all the levers and valves I could get at. No luck yet. Will play with it a little more this week. |

| The Traction Booster plunger is stuck in. Remove cap at rear of valve and tap it forward with a hammer and punch. Make sure linkage is freed up first. |

| Got some time to look at the linkage. Found a weld has broken from a cross shaft that one of the traction boost control levers connects to. I cannot find a photo or diagram that shows the linkage connections under the tractor to see how things hook up. I think a connection rod may have been lost when it broke. Any photos or diagrams showing how all this is to be connected would help. Thanks to everyone for their input. |

| It's kind of like setting the parking brake on an old car or pickup that has never been used. Once applied, it might stay stuck on. Traction Booster/Position control linkage never gets any lube and will get rusted up and then when used, will stick in the "up" position. By the way, the lever closest to your knee isn't the hitch lever. The lever closest to the fender is the lift/lower lever for the hitch. |

| As this is my first tractor I am sure this is only my first mistake. So far I have got a lot of use out of it. We are building a house and the front loader has been a real back saver. To have the 3 point functioning with no traction boost I need to make sure I have all the levers in the right position. Front what I read the two traction boost levers should be in the full forward position. I have 3 levers next to the seat. I think this tractor had a side sickle and backhoe option at one time. A lot of lines with fittings not connected. the three levers next to the seat I am sure the large loop handle is the up and down for the 3 point. The one with tape on it will send fluid to a fitting that is capped off. I know that as the fitting leaked and it shot fluid out when we hit it. Sealed the leak and marked that one as Do Not Use. These two valves have multiple detents and I am sure there is a proper position for all these to allow the large loop handled valve to just move the 3 point up and down. As we only plan to use the 3 point for the back blade and move a trailer around I will plan on leaving the traction boost disconnected for now. Any help on what position everything needs to be in would be helpful. Or any photos under the rear on things should have been connected prior to the linage breakage would also help. |

| Thanks to everyone for the help. As I said a bracket had cracked a weld and the traction boost lever was not operating the valve. The picture helped and we were able to reach up and active the valve by hand and the 3 point now works again. So happy I can use my drag blade. Looking forward to a lot of back saving work on the property. |
