Looking at an engine for a pulling project but unsure if it will work. The tractor is a series 1 D15 but the engine doesn't say 149 or 160 on it. It says 15-5484R on it. Does anyone know if this is a 149 engine or a 160? Also is a 149 and a 160 block the same? Wanting to build a cheap transfer sled tractor.thanks for the help.

The blocks are different due to the 160 having sleeves with a larger OD. also the 160 has 1/2" head bolts. Physically they both interchange as complete engines. The 160 engines also have heavier rods. Truthfully if you're wanting a high output CE block for a B or CA the CE block has more potential other than the manifold and the D14/15 manifold can be refitted to the CE head. I have a CE block in my CA that is bigger than 160 and pulls 3rd gear at 2500 pounds.

Ok so I can't easily put 160 sleeves in a 149 block then?

Not without machining the 149 or 138 block to the 160 specifications. the 138/149 sleeves are interchangeable with each other.

Paul what do you make of those numbers stamped in the block? I would like to make sure this engine I'm looking at is a 149 for sure then.

Only that it was originally built for a D15. Did the tractor have an oil bath or dry type air cleaner? The Series 1 tractor with a 149 had an oil bath. Then the air cleaner was changed to a dry type for the series II tractors with the 160 engine.
