If the shaft coupling is dropped into the bottom of the "Power director" compartment what is required to get it back out?

Probably Gotta split it, you can see it thru the Power Director control valve hole, but not much room there,, what's it doing? What makes you think it dropped?

I haven't pulled the pto hydraulic clutch compartment yet. But I am getting ready to. The book says to be sure it is engaged or the coupling will fall. I have no way to tell that it is engaged aother than to make sure the back shaft worn't turn. It won't turn by hand , but I can put a big set of channel lock pliers on it and turn it. Granted the motor isn't running so the brakes wouldn't be set. I just am spooky about dropping the coupling after seeing the warning in the manual about it.

if the coupling was off or not coupling both shafts, , you could turn the 540 shaft with your fingers.... ez...

True. IF you can't turn it, there is some other problem. Is it hydrualic controlled?

Yes, it is a hydraulic pto. I was mowing with it when it quit working and it was engaged at that point. Acted like it was slipping first then quit all together. It was leaking oil when I brought it in and I know it was leaking out of the back of the pto compartment. Really believe the "o" rings are out at the back and hoping the 2 brake piston "o" rings are out. Looking in the manual for the location of the sump screens.

When I bought my 180 the PTO did not work. I pulled the PTO clutch assembly off to find there was nothing inside. Not even a shaft. The coupling had fallen into the power director section. I used a extendable magnet to retrieve the coupling and used a pry bar inside the center of the coupling to align it back with the rear splines and the engaging fork while my little helper, (grandson), engaged it to the shaft. worked really easy and slick without having to split the tractor. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Shakrat! That is exactly what I was hoping to hear! Did you have any trouble seeing the coupling or was it just by feel? Did you do it all thru the opening between the pto and the "Power- Director" compartment?

It was really easy. The magnet snagged it and lifted it to the Hole and i pulled it out. It fit through the hole on power director compartment. Yes it was all done through the hole. I thought it was going to be harder than what it actually was. Just engage your manual lever behind the battery box and it should stay in place when the PTO housing is dropped. If it does not then follow the procedure manipulating it with the engage lever. Good luck.
