Hello. My father just purchased a allis chalmers tractor and he needs the manual. I figured I would try to get it for his birthday but I not completely sure I have the right one. I figured if I could find a serial number I may be able to get the correct manual but I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Where are the serial numbers on the tractor? Thanks for you help.

Serial number location depends on the model and when it was built. Engine serial numbers rarely match the tractor serial number. Vintage AC serial numbers began with the tractor model letter(s).  Some on the top of the left rear axle housing, some on the transmission housing, some on the torque tube between the engine and the transmission.

Some manuals can be found on line. There are three manuals benefiting owners and operators. The operator's manual covers safe operation and standard maintenance. The shop or service manual covers more details but often doesn't cover standard maintenance like oil changes and valve setting. The parts book shows how its put together and what parts often better for assembly order than the shop manual.

The I&T manuals are not worth their weight in toilet paper, they presume you know everything about tractors so just show a few details. The one that covers my JD 4020 (and 3020, 4320, 4520, and 5020) is about 80 pages thick and the JD shop manual that covers the 4010 and early 4020 is about an inch and a quarter thick. It has more pages on each version of the carburetor used on the gas model than all the 4020 pages in the I&T pseudo manual.
