I have been trying to get my Allis Chalmers B running for the last several days. I am getting fire in to the coil, out of the coil and to the points but. not to the spark plugs. I am looking for a Allis-Chalmers B, Fairbanks- Morris magneto outer cap. Does anyone know where I can find one at a reasonable price?

How is the rotor in the magneto and is it timed right with respect to the main shaft of the magneto?

Gerald, Good question. I found the tooth on the distributor that is marked in red. However, I cannot find any markings on the teeth in the distributor cap. So, bottom line, I'm not sure. Any suggestion as to determine the timing would be greatly appreciated.

The cap SHOULD have a tooth with 1 tip cut on a bevel,----OR a decal in the cap with lines on it and your steel gear mark should center these marks,----I think!!!!! LOL!!!! thanks; ac fleet

I know it has to be done, but I don't know the official way of doing it. I'd think a first approximation would be to turn the main shaft of the magneto until its with a degree or two of the impulse mechanism tripping and then turning the rotor gear until the rotor lines up with a plug wire connection.

If all else fails, turn the mag till the impulse is just about to fire and the rotor on the timing lug and put it together.

If its a "J" Mag, some steel timing gears on the mainshaft have a "pip" mark or "dimple". Some have a beveled tooth. Whichever it may have, that's your timing mark on the steel mainshaft gear. Now, the fiber gear will have an "A" and a "C" stamped in the fiber gear itself. Some are easy to ID, some are a bear to see. I've found a little spot of motor oil on the fiber gear and a magnefieing glass will help you locate the two letters. If you find the "A", the "C" is only a couple teeth away to the right of the "A". Once you ID where the "C" is, paint the two teeth the "C" is in the middle of. HTH Steve@B&B

With the cap removed, bring #1 cylinder up to top on the compression cycle. Then turn the rotor to the timing mark in the cap (at the #1 wire position) and install the cap. This should have your timing correct. Bob

Thanks to all of you for sharing info on setting the timing for my Allis-Chalmers model B tractor. I have studied the documents and followed your instructions(getting the piston up on #1 and setting the rotor to the timing mark). Unfortunately, I still have no fire to the spark plugs. FYI the I have the red timing mark on the steel gear but the A and C marks are not present on the fiber gear in the cap. I tried putting oil on it but it just isn't there!
I found a used cap in a junk yard yesterday. Fortunately the A and C marks at very clear on the cap. Hopefully this will fix the problem. I will keep you informed. Thanks again.

So far, you have not thrown a lot of money at your problem, which is good. You might want to read the manual at the following link until you can comfortably picture how all of the parts, instructions and suggestions fit together:

After cleaning the bowl, carb, tank and setting the timing I finally got my Allis-Chalmers B running. Since the markings were worn off of the gear inside the distributor cap it was a challenge getting the timing right. Your input and sharing of information made it possible. Thanks to all of you for your help. I tried uploading a picture to share with you. However, when I upload the pictures they are not formatted correctly. They are too large and will not fit. Can anyone tell me how to upload the pictures to the correct settings. Anyway. It is great to have the tractor running. It now purrs like a kitten.

In the full reply editor the window for giving the picture address just above to preview field there are two fields height and width. Generally a landscape picture has a 3 unit height and a 4 unit width. Setting the field height to 480 and the width to 640 works nicely no matter what the pixel count is from the camera. When I reshow pictures those are the dimensions I use nearly every time except for the AC wartime letter I used 640 wide by 880 tall since it was taller than it was wide.
