What is a good tractor to get that is relatively modern with 4wd/loader. I am thinking MF4200/4300 series, White 6410, Agco LT70, Agco Allis 8745, Challenger 425/435 All are basically the same tractor with a different paint job. Deere always commands a healthy premium and I don't want to pay extra for the name. Not real familiar with CNH products. I also wondered about the MF 3625/3635/3645. A little smaller tractor then the others but seem like a handy unit. Does anybody know anything about them? I know they were Italian built and that is about it. Thank you |

| Massey 4600 series seems to be a good tractor. Their newer than those mentioned. Just depends on your budget. We have a 4610 80 pto horsepower. 3 cylinder AGCO engine. Does a lot of loader work. We like it. |

The thing with all those import tractors is parts. I don't know them well enough to know which ones you can get parts and which you can't. Around here I think I would take a long hard look at kobota only because they are about the only dealer around. I really like the CNH 5240 I have a little bigger then you mentioned but it is as new as I would want in their stuff. I have heard alot of horror stories about the next generation newer say 2000 and up. Alot of issues with the electronics from the few I have known people who owned. I looked at a long import about 1990 I forget the year or model a few years back now. It was 60 hp diesel 4wd with a loader. I figured it would be a great haying tractor. Anyway it had a broken drive shaft in the front end so you couldn't use 4wd. At first I thought no big deal the price is right and I have replaced those before on a different tractor. Well lucky for me I looked it up on line first. Turns out you can't get any of the front end parts for some of those long 4wd. The moral of the story is the outsourced import tractors just don't have the parts avaliable that the old tractors do. I decided I could restore something simpler from the 70's or 80s instead that I could get parts for. |

Hello Caledonian: I wondered about the 4600 series too. What tier level is your tractor? I worried about having problems with all the emissions requirements on the newer tractors. |

Hello Dan73: All tractors mainline or off brand are imports in that size range. The MF line is one of only 3 mainline manufacturers so I know I will be able to get parts for them into the future. I have never been impressed with Kubota myself. They always seem light and "tinny" sounding to me. I may be wrong but that is my perception. I agree that something like a Long would be difficult to find parts for. I have no intention of going for an off-brand line. The only one I might consider besides the big three might be a McCormick. |

| I have heard good about the Mahindra in the 40-75hp range. Unless they have gone the other way, they learned plenty from making all those smaller tractors for International from the late 50's into the early 70's. |

I agree kobota look under built. But they are everywhere and sell parts. As to the main line or off brand I think they are all built by the same outsource companies to be honest. They where built in Romania for a long time those are hard to get parts for and now most of them come from india. I guess that was my point I would rather have something older like a 185. There is one sandy lake posted on the classified page recently I would look at if I had the funds. 2 wd though. Case made some nice 4wd models in the late 80s early 90s. The early ones are all mechanical linkage to hydraulic controls. The later ones like my CIH to be technically correct as it was right after the case IH merger are electoral solinoid instead of mechanical but no computer controls. So for my money I would rather buy something like that. I really like the case tractors from that time frame. My 5240 is actually a case re badged after the merger still built in the case factory just painted red. They basically use a Cummings motor with a proven case transmission. I think I would go that route and rebuild it if needed then you know what you have. The modern stuff with computers and now the new diesel setup just isn't for me. |

I recently watched a video a guy made about his Mahindra tractor. I think it was about a 60 HP tractor. Basicly a bucket of electrical nightmares mixed with poor mechanical design. Other than that I don't know about them, but I'd stay away. The neighbor who has been helping me work on my tractor has a fairly new case. Not sure of the year, but between 60 and 80 HP. He was just telling me last weekend about it's problems and flaws. The worst being no frame rails. Also the loader simply bolts into the sides of the casting on the front half of the tractor. He's already broken the bolts off and had to drill them out once. Think you've got a good plan going with buying an older tractor. Just my two cents, probably worth about half a cent. | Brad it is pretty common to see case tractors built with the motor and transmission as the frame no tool bars. But I haven't seen anyone hang a loader off it without adding in support bars that take the place of the tool bars. I think your friend should look into modifying his loader mounting. |

Yeah, the father-in-law's 33 hp case is the same way. I'm not impressed with the design. I advised the neighbor to drive the #$%^ thing the mile and a half down the road to the dealer and get rid of it before something worse happened than just breaking bolts. | Not very new but if you can find a Versitle Bi Directional they are a fantastic loader tractor. I've used not of the local farmers a few times and they are the best loader tractor you can get. |

The bigger of the two he got used and you know when you buy something used you buy the other persons problems, but they have been simple and it's pretty good horse, The new one he bought about 4-5 years ago has not given him a lick of trouble. It's the three cylinder diesel. I've run it for him in the hay field and it's a nice little tractor to run. It's funny to see him put a big round bale on each end and take of with it like nothing. Real economical to run too. |

Have a friend that has a Kioti that he let me drive. I was impressed or maybe it was just because it was the right color? Anywho he upsized to the next bigger model the next year and has been happy with it. and older Kubota m7030DT 4wd Tractor some nice 4wd models 90 to 98s. Isn't Fiat building all the <100HP tractors, with the exception of Mahindra and the Japanese/Korean tractors. After my experience with a Long LandTrac Compact from Korea, I wouldn't buy anything that didn't have planetary gears in the front. That leaves out Kubota and they should be painted green (the color of money) anyway. I don't totally understand the Tier 3 and 4 diesels, but we can thank the environmentalist for them. Sounds as if they are going to be service intensive. I would look for an older MF with a Perkins or an older Ford. Mahindra made a 65HP several years ago that was the old style. The big Kioti's might be worth a look. I would sure buy service and dealer if I got a new one. Bill

Which leaves you with EGR, which robs efficiency. This may still need a particle filter, which is the biggest maintenance problem. |
