was feeding cows with my 8010 this morning and lost steering. can spin steering wheel with flick of finger. pto, 3 point arms, loader all still function tractor will go backwards and forwards just wont turn. where should i start looking?

Any oil leaks from the steering orbital?
I've heard of the shaft/linkage from steering wheel down to wear out and break as well? Perhaps that your problem?

ok no oil leaks. shaft is spinning orbital motor. i pulled return line off orbital and have hydraulic oil coming out of orbital valve but cant get anything to come out of the two lines that go to steering cylinder. so i'm thinking it may need a orbital. or something is stuck inside of it. can these be repaired or do i just need to call and get a new one?

It could be a hose collapsed, it sounds odd being under pressure but the hose will collapse inside and restrict flow.

what you mean collapsed? you think one of the two steering lines collapsed?. got good flow to orbital. got good pressure coming out. can spin steering wheel like its not hooked to anything. checked behind muffler to make sure its spinning and could see rubber spinning when wife turned wheel. is there a key or a locking pin that steering wheel shaft locks to orbital? maybe? i don't know i got to have tractor to feed with all help is appreciated.

The inside lining of the hose will separate and close off the flow. If you have flow out of the pump but not to the cylinder I would check the hoses going from the orbital motor to the steering cylinder.when you say you don't have oil coming out of the two lines that go to the steering cylinder, are you checking it at the cylinder or at the orbital motor?

i checked it at orbital. i took both hoses loose and off orbital and all i had was a drip from both sides on orbital. only way i could get either to drip was to set and spin steering wheel like a mad man.

Check the coupler teeth are worn off,the teeth ere usually ok on orbit motor

coupler teeth? is that the piece that goes on orbital? ill go check it now. never had a steering wheel spin so freely.

If it were me I would want to make sure I had pressure and flow to that steering motor before I tore it apart. If you don't have a gauge maybe just pull the line off, point it away and see what happens? Good luck hope you get it fixed soon.

splines on steering shaft are wore out. anyone have part number for this tiny shaft. i have taken it all way apart and you can take the steering wheel side of splines and spin it in orbital valve. glad it wore out going slow that could have been a bad ride.

all i can say is i dont know what engineer decided it needed this small shaft to be splined together but i'm glad this went out feeding cows and not coming home in road gear the other day. might of been a parts 8010 then. this is something that needs to be checked ever so often i think. anyways it will be on my list of things ill be checking in my other tractors. i see same parts are in 7010 up to 7080 and 8010 and 8030.

well ordered parts from steel your money dealer. 188 dollars for that little 2 inch splined metal. and new grommets for mounting back were 19$ apiece needed 3. hmmmmm seems like i should have gotten a lube job for all this..... well thank you all for pointing me in correct direction to diagnose problem.

last time i needed steering shaft part for a 8000 series i had to get at salvage yard cant believe agco brought something back
