This morning at work, I had to move an Allis ED40 in to the shop to do some repair to the homemade snow plow that was mounted on it. Over the years I've been around this site, I've never heard anyone say much good about the ED40 tractors and their cold starting abilities. In fact, I've heard several horror stories, so I wasn't too hopeful when I looked at the thermometer and saw that the temperature was 9 degrees. While my partner was out getting fuel for the skid steer that we planned to use to move the frozen ED40 into the shop, I grabbed a jumper pack and my mittens and went out to give it a try. After connecting the jumper pack, I turned the switch to the glow plug position and counted off sixty seconds, then pulled the throttle open and hit the starter. After about two turns, it popped and stumbled a bit, so I kept cranking. This was already more than I had expected. Another half dozen turns, and the old beast was running! I kept the glow plugs on until it mostly smoothed out, then let it warm up some before driving it to the shop. When my partner came back, he stopped and stared at the empty parking spot and shook his head, then grinned when he saw me laughing at him front the front door. Neither of us would have ever bet that it would start or run so well. As you can see, this tractor is no fairytale restoration job, and its best days are probably behind it, but it sure impressed me today! BTW, even though the thermometer is green, it IS accurate...

brett, once, a while ago, I had to move the dd grader, just a quarter turn of a wheel, to get to a busted wheel stud. I had a weak battery and a can of ether, with about a half a puff left in it. Hit the starter, and then sprayed the ether, it started on no ether, cause the can was tilted away from that last little bit... it was 27ยบ that mornin...
