Why are these tractors so cheap? I know there is no love for red tractors here (especially that shade of red) but are these tractors really that bad? Anyone ever owned one?
The reason I ask is that I went to look at a planter and I ran across a Massey 2745 that I can buy for less than the price of a new lawn tractor and it has only 2500 hours, new tires and the AC blows cold. It was about 30 degrees the morning I was there and the V8 Perkins fired right up and I know he hadn't plugged it in because there was no power to the Quonset where it and the planter were parked.

them Perkins are good engines! if it's that cheap, buy it! (it's still AGCO) should be able to find a use for it!

We had one until about 6 years ago that grandpa bought new. This was before I got to do much actual field work, so I don't really have much to go on, but I'll ask dad and grandpa. I didn't really care for it from what I can remember, but it could have been that ours was just wore out there towards the end.

I have a distant neighbor who bleeds MF red. Must have a dozen Massey's including at least one V8. It seems to work ok but it is one of the loudest tractors I've ever heard. can hear it working a field over a mile away, can't imagine what it's like in the cab.

Tranny and rear end problems for sure. There is a lot on the west coast and lower mainland BC like this.

A friend of mine blew up his Massey with Perkins V8 a couple years ago. Still sits waiting for another engine. He started switching from Massey to Case now. The Cases are real cheap too. He's a small hobby farmer like myself.

If all updates were done they were good tractor! We never had any rear end trouble in any we sold. Air conditioning and 24 speed clutch packs were main problems. And a couple first ones with transmission's that were not assembled correctly. We sold quite a few 2745's I'm looking at one for the farm now. Good Cheap Power!

I've got (inherited from my Uncle) a 1992 MF 231 with the 3 cyl. Perkins diesel. Have never plugged it in and starts right up provided the battery is in good shape. The interesting thing is that it was built for the European market so everything seems to be "backwards" from what we use in the US. Tach goes from right to left and in KM, lift raise/lower is opposite my other tractors, etc. Takes you a minute to adjust mentally after switching from one tractor to another. I heard that this causes a drop in value......But it's powerful and does everything I want it to do with no problems.
