Before the disassembly,the pressure was probably at the o in normal,i am wondering what i need to do as far as oil pump goes.The rebuild kit is 120 dollars the vanes are 40.Seems like the old vanes if cleaned good ,would be a broke in fit,but i am a novice.Maybe new springs and gaskets,will i be sorry? Do you have the pump apart? Any pumps that I have had that was low on pressure and the vanes and springs were good lost the pressure from an eat out cover or the ball in the stem was not holding. Other problems can exist like stem bushing being wore over sized. The cover on the left looked like the one on the right before I resurfaced it. The ball in the picture is rust pitted.  |

Thanks men you both helped, Mine is not scarred at all,so i am thinking springs on vanes and relief valve ,maybe a ball also ,a cleaning and back together ,also looking at the end play

Before I had a shop to do my own restorations, I had a friend/restorer do my '39 RC. About a year after it was done, the oil pressure went to zilch. I pulled it apart and the pump showed signs of tinkering - the screw slots were all buggered up, there was a lot of wear in the pump, broken spring, etc. I bought a new pump from Sandy Lake and all is fine (after new rod & main bearings and cam bushings). I certainly don't want anyone to think I put any blame on my friend as the project cost had gone so high I think he felt that I was in deep enough. But my point is, I won't button up another engine unless I am sure the oil pump will do it's job. Tom, I think you are on the right track. The gasket under the cover does not want to be thicker than .007. I mic different sheets of paper and cut a gasket from the proper thickness if I do not have the proper gasket set. If the gasket is to thick it will bypass oil the same as if the cover is bad.

Make sure you check the pin in the camshaft that drives the pump while it is apart. NORMAL in the gage with the needle on the O is still (normal) oil pressure which means your pump is/was not all that bad.
Your loss in the pump pressure if any could be in the filter area. If an overhaul is/was needed it sure is time to check out the pump and make sure it is in top condition.

Yep! Mine was worn pretty bad, If that pin breaks, you lose your oil pump action.
