Hi
I just removed the cover on the steering gear pedestal of my 36 WC and notice there is no trace of oil or grease around the worm and pinion, just rust and moisture, should the pedestal be full of oil or packed with grease, I would have thought that the bearings on the worm gear would need some sort of lubrication, I am concerned that if i was to fill the pedastal with oil i would end up with a load of oil leaks ??

Well if it's not loose, grinding or such you may dodge the bullet. I don't think I'd put oil in it, just a good grease and don't fill the cavity. Put in just enough so the gears and bearing will stay lubed. Obviously it leaked before, so try the grease first and if you get a mess pretty quick then you can do a permanent fix.

That would be a good place for some corn head grease. If the bearings are dry, regular grease gun grease may not get in and lube them very easily. The corn head grease is a lot thinner and can find it's way into places easier.

Thanks everyone, I managed to find some type of grease i a spray can !! i have blasted the bearings with it and should hopefully do the job and fiished it of with a coat of normal greese for good measure , was going to replace the knuckle joint but found someone in the past has welded it up to the shaft for some reason so its impossible to get a grinder near it without removing the channel, so as one says if its not broke don't fix it, so i will spray some WD40 on it and give it a coating of grease and call it a day
