suggest your shift lever peg has jumped out of the rail fork slot.  If the reverse fork was broke it could still be shifted into another gear, but will stall out.  Remove the shift cover and repair by correcting tolerances that allowed the ball end to jump out.

Try putting the shifter back in the reverse position and shifting carefully with both hands to steady the shift lever better and no pressure on the gears. You may be able to get it in another gear to get it where you need to so you can determine the problem.

What happens when you put shift lever in natural and let clutch out? What happens when you put it in a forward gear and let clutch out?     MACK

Remove pin holding cover on gear shift. Slide cover out of way , then dig snap ring out, lift gear shift straight up. Should be able to use long screw driver to move rail inline with other two.    MACK

I had the same issue with a WD45 recently that was stuck in 4th gear.  The Shift lever had slipped out of the forks and rods that allowed the unit to shift gears.  Overall it was a very simple fix.

Remove shift knob (if you still have one) and dust cap from the shift lever.  Where the lever enters the shift housing, there will be a snap ring and a washer that need to be removed.  Once you remove those two items, pull the shift lever straight out of of the housing.  As someone else mentioned, use a long screwdriver to realign the forks and then reassemble.

While the video below explains how to fix the problem on a lawn tractor, the concept will be the same once you have removed the snap ring and washer.

Just a thought, The tractors not on a hill or something pushed up against the stack with pressure on it is it? Maybe if you hooked a chain to it and gave it a very slight pull forward it would relieve pressure and come out of gear.
