Anybody know where I can get a couple to hold the elephant ears on the 3 point hitch, without paying 15 to 20.00 per bolt. Looked at the local Farm and Home store who used to have them, local hardware store, central tractor, etc. I know McMaster Carr and Fastenall might have them I am thinking the Freight + the cost of the bolts will be prohibitive. Thanks for any suggestions. Tom |

McMaster-Carr only goes to 5" long in grade 5 square head bolts, $8.08 each, probably $4 shipping for several. Check Van Wall, I'm sure many Deere tractors used a similar bolt to hold cast iron rear wheel weights in place. In my early 4020 parts book R67235 is 5" x 5/8" square head, replaced R48956. There is a Fastenall here in my town in NW Iowa. I've never been in the place and I don't know what kind of stock they carry. If you special order from them they may have free shipping to the store. I would think the Big City near Madison County would have one. Edit... I get all my large and odd nuts and bolts from Midstate Bolt & Nut Co. I just needed some 3/4 x 5 for my wheel weights. They have a local store here nearby so that makes it nice. check with a local machine shop/ fabricatorshop. they usually buy box lots, use 3/4 of them, store the rest for the 'next ' job... Guy here(neighbour) has LOTS of 'oddball' stuff in bins....... Somehow a lot of it finds it's way into my shop...... If you were closer, I know I have a dozen or so..'somewhere'.. Square head bolts are uncommon these days. The Fastenal at Ames tends to have only common bolts. Theisen's has only hex head bolts the best I remember. Same thing at Menard's, the other big box home stores have poorer hardware selections than Menard's. Menard's on line doesn't admit to any 5/8" square head bolts. Hokel Supply in Ames has a chance of having square head 5/8" but I've not shopped for them there. They specialize in odd fasteners. A workable alternative is two square nuts and a 6" double threaded stud or 6" of all thread. Might anchor one nut with a permanent thread lock. No square head 5/8" bolts in my bolt drawers at home, I doubt at the farm. McMaster-Carr is good to deal with, phone or on line ordering is quick, they take plastic and like to think they are selling to an company and deliver overnight, I think for Iowa out of an Omaha warehouse. They do prefer to hide the vendors of most things but tools. Trouble here is that they don't have a 5/8" square head over 5" long. Gerald J. |

I just use a hex head bolt and stick a screw driver in beside it if it wants to turn...they usually don't as they are in an area that gets well oiled :-) ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

Sorry you had a bad experience Lonn. Generally Cat nut and bolt hardware is cheaper than hardware stores and always the best quality. Ether the dealer got you or it was better than grade 8. I was breaking bolts holding roller towers on old D6 track frame. Commented to parts man should have looked up part number to get right length of grade 8 bolt,and his answer surprised me at the time those are special grade 12 or even 16. Never broke one of the special ones not much more cost,just more time as they all where in one warehouse so no over nite delivery. |

Unsure where the free shipping is for Fastenall - I needed 4 helacoils - said not in stock but a store in Georgia had them in stock - 2 days to get them in - well they were $2.30 each I believe - and $10 for shipping cost . The square head bolts on the old machinery were what, grade 3 or less? No need to buy a high-priced bolt. Yes if you're running specialty equipment with an engineered bolt you might have to pay extra $$. Lot's more $$. |

Yes most square head bolts were grade 2, but JD wheel weight bolts were grade 5 because grade 2 weren't strong enough. Gerald J. |
