I'm in the process of restoring a 53 WD (I've known it as "Finlyn" since I can remember) that I learned to drive on 40 years ago. Bought it back into the family about 6 years ago and have been "slowly" reworking the old gal. It was pretty much junk when I got it home. So far I've got the back half rebuilt. The first pic is what we started with. Second pic is how it looks now. About 3 months ago I bought a basket case WD 45 that the owner started to restore but gave up on. He had the motor and head rebuilt by a local machinist but couldn't continue on. The tractor has all the parts I needed to finish my WD, I'll be putting the 45 engine in my WD. The tin is nearly perfect on the parts 45. I was lucky enough to get the rust out where the wire runs up for the tail light in the fender. I've never seen a better set of original WD fenders anywhere....if they are original.
First question is in the pictures there appears to be a factory hole in the fenders and fender supports for a fowrard facing headlight and wire to go down the strut on each of the fenders, did the later WD's have field lights on the fenders? Are these aftermarket fenders? The previous owner said they are original.
Next, the parts tractor came with a set of taller fender brackest as seen in the pic. Were they available for a special task or purpose? Should I use them or stay with the standerd brackets? Thanks for any opinions and information. Leon B MO

you need to send a nice small bale wire through there to pull your lite wire through' will work fine.

The taller brackets are for a WD45. They had larger tires than a WD. If you put 14.9 x28 I place of the WD 13.6x28 the tires tear the fenders up when all the way in. We had to change them out on my dads WD when we put new tires on .the allis dealer swapped WD 45 brackets for our WD brackets.

Leon, what are the measurements on the fender brackets?
If I remember correctly, in the AGCO books they weren't called fenders but some kind of guard......???

Personally, I would leave that 45 engine with the 45 rearend, it is much stronger and quieter than the WD rearends... and rebuild the WD engine and finish it off, then go through your WD45 and have two nice tractors.

The parts tractor I bought was a 1950 WD with a 45 motor, my WD is a 53 with the 45 trans rear end but the original 201. So both are kinday misfits. I still wonder about the place in the fender for a forward facing light and place to route wire through fender. Ted, I just turned 50, so if thats still a young fart in your book, I commend you. I don't think there were any holes in the front of the fenders on the WD or 45's. Your current work looks great. Family tractors have a special place. Regards, Chris

Dad's WD has more curl on rear of fender than my 45.Must keep wheels on second setting so 14.9's don't wreck fenders.

Would anyone be willing to take a measurement of the two different brackets? My WD45 has the 14.9 tires and they will hit the fenders when they are clear in. I am wondering if at some point the brackets were swapped for the shorter WD ones...

My 49 WD came from the factory with a red lensed "Bullet" light, which was the only factory supplied light at that time. I think later versions may have had a white light with a switchable red bulb for night operation. At least I have seen them mounted under the seat.

The three different brackets are from the top center hole to the bottom center hole are from 9.5, on early one to 10.5 on later one, and the one on my 45D is 12.5 inches.

Thanks to both of you! Now I gotta measure mine and see what I've got. I know that my 14.9 x 28's will hit if I pull them all the way in.
