| Im trying to replace the axle seal on the final drive. I got the axle nut off and the oil pan and got the snap ring off. I can't seem to get the axle to slide out and off the big Bull gear. We tried a slide hammer on the hub part of the axle nut no luck. Is there something I'm missing or some kind of a trick to get this apart. Any help is appreciated, Thanks Steve. |

Probably similar to the D17 in that regard. I had a heck of a time getting the axle out of mine too. The axle can be a very snug to almost pressed-on fit with the bearings. Awkward place to get any decent force on it. Ended up making a weldment that bolts onto the axle housing or casting. It was tapped 3/4-16 fine thread hole for a commercial puller threaded rod. I don't remember exactly where the 2 holes & bolts (not shown) at the bottom anchored to. But the top 2 went into some already tapped holes in the casting. Had to be careful to not break anything by over tightening the threaded rod, so I eased into it and then started using a 2# hammer to knock it loose. Took quite a bit of persuasion, but it finally popped. Most of the rest of the way was using the wrench to tighten it, then whack on it some more until it finally came out. Think I had to put some spacers in to make up the needed travel. I polished the axle quite a bit before assembling it so that the inner race would go on easier. Here's a pic of the "puller" less the 3/4-16 threaded part. You're welcome to use it, if it'll work for your I600........and I can find it.  |

| Screw a bolt in inner axel hole. With a big sledge hammer beat the axle out. If it won't come, you may have to cut bearing off shaft. MACK |

| Sometimes you can lay a bottle jack in there sideways (handle down) and use it like a press to push the axle out. Getting the jack supports/blocked is the key. Like Mack says, I always get a new bolt to replace the old bolt I'm going to beat on with a maul. |

I missed that in the original post.. Never mentioned taking out the threaded bolt on the BACK END of the shaft.. From Mack and Dr Allis it sounds like it is made just like my "B".. you take out the BACK SIDE BOLT on the inner bearing, then pound or push OUTWARD... The got the snap ring and retainer nut off the gear, but never mentioned the INNER bolt. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |
